All Seasons Reading
« on: July 15, 2004, 05:56:31 PM »

One of the reasons I wanted the HoW server to work (WoF especially) is I finished the brilliant trilogy by Tad Williams 'A Memory of Sorrow and Thorn' these holidays and wanted to discuss it. It's been awhile since I've been totally knocked off my feet like that by a book or series of books... last time I was moved so was when I read the Ancient Future by Traci Harding. In fact, these books have taken over the 'favorite' spot that Traci Harding's (also brilliant) books previously held. When I read on the net how Tad Williams said that his last book was a long, hard slog that almost killed him and it ached for him to write every sentence, I was surprised. It certainly doesn't show it the book. To Green Angel Tower is the last book in the trilogy, and by far the best. Williams says he didn't plan the trilogy much at all, but everything seems to be linked, every little clue, sidestory and hint culminating in this last book. The interweaving storyline is just amazing. And the characters... excellent developmental work I say. ESPECIALLY Simon. I'm just... speechless. I can't really say much else intelligible about this Trilogy. JUST GO READ IT!!!

Anyway *ahem* the point of this thread I would think would be to discuss what books you have read recently, over the vacation. I have explained what books I read above, come out with yours! We are all fantasy fans after all.

I'll just pretend I didn't hear anything about Nintendo games being turned into books.

I'm supposed to be tackling Shakespeare's Measure for measure these holidays, but it's sort of gotten lost in the sea of essays and assignments

well i'm off to visit the BoS (see my website if you don't understand http://bosws.com.au/home/popebinga/ )

taking Faerie Tale with me cos i have a nearly 2 hours train journey ahead of me. I'm still reading I, Robot but I'm not taking that with me cos its in a large hardcover with the entire Foundation "trilogy" in one volume making it about 8x5x2.5 inches and not easy for travelling with...

anyway, bye!

I must get a list of the stuff I have access to now... as I've currently moved into a "half-way" house with a guy from work....  it's not ACTUALLY a half-way house, it's just that i should be moving with Poper sometime in the relative near future again...  either way, the guy i'm living with has about 5 bookshelves FULL of stuff, and about a whole floor of other stuff.. so expect book reviews in the near future.

My mum recently bought Talon of a Silver Hawk and King of Foxes (which means that I can also read it too). I still haven't finished the Serpentwar Saga though... I stopped halfway in because I didn't have the rest of the books. I have the rest of them now, but holidays are ending now, there's no way I'd have time to get into them. *sigh* Till next holidays then...

Cen, I'm sooo glad you finished it! :D  M,S&T is one of the BEST books I have ever read!  I LOVE it! Its an amazing story and I liked what Tad did with the characters and how they developed! But, if I start discussing it I'll be here all day! :)

Anywho, at the mo, I'm reading The Golden Ass by Apuleius. Has anyone else read this? Its a fantasic story so far. The way its written and the humour are both fantasic (Not a good as M,S&T though! ;) )

He is a crazy author indeed... but that makes it even more fun (his interviews are highly entertaining to read). And cheers Vorz! They're my favorite books now, I see you weren't just kidding when you were raising them on that shiny pedestal there. Jiriki rocks :D And don't be afraid to discuss 'em all day... I had a go at the start of this topic, but eventually I was just so overwhelmed I lost the words. I was dying to discuss it at WoF, but just when I finished the books the server went down!
