After "Hood" I've just finished another Lawhead book called "The Skin Map".
It's an odd book - a time travel, multi-parallel universe "Da Vinci Code-esque" hunt for a lost artifact (the map) & missing girldfriend of main character. There are several groups of main characters being in different time and places or in some cases the same place but at different times by going through "ley line portals".
Basic story is this down trodden Twenty-something meets his Great-great-great grandad who every one thought had died. Finds out Grandad can travel in time etc. Boy tries to show girlfriend but loses her in mid-travel. And thus the "adventure" starts. They pick up companions, accidentally get split up in to various groups and meet the "bad guys" along the way.
Over all it is actually quite easy to read albeit but there's too many Deus Ex Machina's. I mean most of the book is a hunt for this girlfriend who has ended up in 16th century Austria or somewhere after falling through a rift. She settles down to open "Europe's First Coffee House" (!? yeah... no idea. I think because shes a trendy Londoner.) and all of a sudden she appears in egypt resucing her boyfriend from the bad guys because she met the royal "alchemist" who apparently could make a machine to find and follow these rift things. Yet just a few pages before she still had no idea what happened, how she got where she was, or how she was going to get back "home".
This Skin Map that they are all looking for, by the way just to wrap it up, is the actual skin of a man who has been tattoo with the secrets of following these ley line portal things.
Yeah well. Odd. Like I said.
I'm going to read the rest just to see if it makes sense.
