Website plugging
« on: June 03, 2005, 10:54:13 PM »

Recently the staff has noticed a rise in blatant website plugging going on. Now, before we talk to each individual member who's guilty of this, let me just explain to everyone our position on this practice.

A website plug is when you post a topic or in a thread with the sole intent of bringing people to your website. That post does not contribute to any discussion of the thread, even if it may seem related. This is considered spam, and you all know our position on spam.

If you would like to have people visit your personal website, there is a way to do this that is allowed: add a link in your signature.

Your signature is YOUR signature. As long as it contains no offensive material, you can put WHATEVER YOU WANT in it. If you have a personal website that updates regularly and you want to let members know about it, just update your signature with a message like "Updated on June 3rd, 2005". Or, if you update frequently you might want to create your thread in the Shops & Residences forum (remember, only 1 thread per member. So if you already have one there you can't do this). The advantage of this is that whenever you update you can say so in your own thread and it won't be spam, because  that's the purpose of your thread!

But we ask that you at least post a preview of whatever you're updating.

So that's that I suppose. We will be talking to some members in particular about their posting habits. No warnings will be given, no one will be banned. We just want to curb this trend before it gets out of hand.

Thank you.

I'd just like to add to this. For personal thread plugging, there's a right way to go about it, and then, there's a wrong way to go about it. Here's the right way : Post a link to your thread in your signature with a little blurb about it, maybe encouraging people to check it out.

This is the wrong way : Posting in every welcome thread with a plug for your personal thread.

Try to keep that in mind please.
