Rules and Tips
« on: March 14, 2016, 06:50:26 PM »

These are the Terms of Use you agreed on when you registered*. All other rules (see the next two posts) are build upon this foundation.

* The green coloured text is new in the Terms of Use as of 21st of April 2016. In the past these parts were already active rules, but they are now enclosed within the Terms of Use to make our rules and regulations more clear.

Quote
Welcome to the Hall of Worlds (HoW)! You are about to become a HoW member. But first we would like you to read our Terms of Use as well as state whether you are at least 13 years old. Click the appropriate button at the bottom of our Terms of Use to continue.

Through your use of this forum you agree that
  • You will not post any material which is false, defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, adult material, or otherwise in violation of any International or United States Federal law.
  • You will NEITHER post any copyrighted material unless you own the copyright or you have written consent from the owner of the copyrighted material, NOR discuss on this forum illegal activities in regards to copyrighted material.
  • You are aware that spam, flooding, advertisements, chain letters, pyramid schemes, and solicitations are forbidden on this forum.
  • You will keep your username appropriate.
  • You will never give the password to your HoW useraccount to another person except an administrator of HoW Staff but only for your protection or validity reasons.
    • We HIGHLY recommend you use a complex and unique password for your account, to prevent account theft.
  • You will NEVER use another person's account for any reason.
  • You may NOT have multiple accounts.
  • It is your responsibility to present clean and accurate information in your member profile. Any information the HoW Staff determines to be inaccurate or vulgar in nature will be removed, with or without prior notice. Appropriate sanctions may be applicable.
  • You remain solely responsible for the content of your posted messages, and will indemnify and hold harmless the Hall of Worlds (HoW) Staff -which are the forum owners, the forum administrators and the forum moderators-, any related websites to this forum and its subsidiaries. The HoW Staff also reserves the right to reveal your identity (or any other related information collected on this service) in the event of a formal complaint or legal action arising from any situation caused by your use of this forum.
    • Please note
      • With each post, your IP address is recorded, in the event that you need to be banned from this forum or your ISP contacted. This will only happen in the event of a major violation of this agreement.
      • It is impossible for the HoW Staff to confirm the validity of posts. They do not actively monitor the posted messages, and as such, are not responsible for the content contained within. They do not warrant the accuracy, completeness, or usefulness of any information presented. The posted messages express the views of the author, and not necessarily the views of this forum, its staff, its subsidiaries, or this forum's owner. Anyone who feels that a posted message is objectionable is encouraged to notify an administrator or moderator of this forum immediately. HoW Staff reserves the right to remove objectionable content, within a reasonable time frame, if they determine that removal is necessary. This is a manual process, so they may not be able to remove or edit particular messages immediately.
      • A cookie is placed by the forum software. It is a text file containing bits of information (such as your username and password) in your browser's cache. This is ONLY used to keep you logged in/out. The forum software does not collect or send any other form of information.

The above stated Terms of Use apply to all aspects of the Hall of Worlds, including member profiles, associated websites and posts within the forum.

Forum Rules in addition or in clarification of the Terms of Use

Introductions

Do not post 'Testing my sig' posts. Or similar variants. [common sense]

Screen names and Avatars

Screen names and Avatars fall under the Terms of Use in regards to posted material. The Staff reserves the right to edit an avatar / nickname that is deemed to fall within the aforementioned criteria of the Terms of Use.

Signatures

To prevent signatures being bigger than actual posts, the signature size limit is 5 lines or 300 characters. Image-signatures should not exceed 80 pixels and in combination with text 100px.

The Terms of Use also apply on signatures, and therefore signatures are also not to be used for advertising.

Spoilers

When you post a spoiler, use the spoiler-tag, unless HoW Staff specifically stated there is an exception to this rule in a certain thread. If there's an exception in the thread, it is found in the first post of said thread. To post spoiler tags:

Code: [Select]
Your spoilers go here.
Posting images

Not everyone has high-speed internet, large internet bundles or uses large screens. If you want to embed images in your post, these should not break forum tables, and be 1MB or less. If the image is larger, please link to it.

Posting polls

The poll format is severely restrictive as it limits discussion, discourages similar or identical topics, and excludes members participating. For these reasons we feel that most, if not all topics, work better as traditional posts. Answer the following questions before posting a poll:
  • Does your poll question work just as well in a non-poll format?
  • If so, why make it a poll?
  • Do your poll answer choices include all possible answers?
  • If not, why limit people to just those few choices you give them?
  • Is it possible that people might have more than one of these answers?
  • If so, how can they choose two or more answers?
Copyright Issues

Because certain authors do not tolerate fanfiction or other projects derived from their intellectual property, such activities should be kept off this forum.
  • Raymond E.Feist does NOT tolerate any fanfiction or projects derived on his intellectual property.
Posting Etiquette
Or: how to behave on the forums. See also the oldbies forum survival tips.

Some general etiquette that everyone should TRY to follow whilst posting here at Honest John's.
  • Please be polite, even if you disagree. Arguments are fine, as long as they do not either consume the thread with pointless bickering, or become a personal insult.
  • One word posts (such as "lol") don't contribute to discussion. We will delete one word posts.
  • If you feel a topic is stupid or pointless, do not post in that topic to tell everyone how stupid you think it is. Not only is it rude, someone else may find the topic interesting.
  • Please don't write with the CAPS LOCK on /with capital letters. It’s incredibly annoying to look at AND to fix.
  • Don't troll and do not feed trolls.
  • In case you spot a rule being broken, report this to a moderator. That will be all. Do NOT take the moderator seat and tell them off. This also goes for any ongoing flaming. Report ASAP and ignore it. The Staff will deal with it.
Offensive posts
And how to deal with them

We'd like to give you the following guidelines in dealing with offensive posts:
  • At all times remain calm. Reacting hostile on a hostility doesn't make you look better than the first offender.
  • Report the post via the "Report to moderator" link, found at the bottom-right of each post. The moderators appointed to the forum will get a note. Please explain *why* it is offensive to you.
  • Do not quote hostilities! Why duplicating something you dislike? And why give the moderators more posts to edit? They are all fellow members who come here for their entertainment. So less work for them is more time to have fun.

If a post is reported it doesn't mean it will be (immediately) moderated. Often mods/admins ask for second opinions of other mods/admins, so the course of action is decided by multiple people. Besides public moderation (like: editing/deleting posts or posting a 'nudge' in the thread), we can privately warn and/or message members as well. So if you see nothing happening it doesn't mean nothing happens.

An oldbies forum survival tips

  • When in doubt, ask. Assumptions can be potential miscalculations.

  • Apologies are not cooties. Nothing bad happens when you apologize, but it might help defuse situations.

  • Follow the ground rules of common sense and human interaction. And please note:

    • That writing can be misinterpreted.
    • A person in real life may act and react differently than their written text.
    • Online sarcasm is often difficult or not possible to grasp.
    • Alcohol and online activity combined may lead to regrets.

  • Forums have life cycles. New members are essential to keep a forum healthy.

    • New members are not here to usurp your position in the community.
    • Welcoming new members increases their participation
    • The participation threshold of others is lowered if members are treated kindly.
    • A friendly PM to a new member can be a warm bath if they don't know anyone yet.

  • Tossing your personal and/or contact information on a forum is at your own risk.

  • Drama is destructive

    • Problems in your life are sorted out in your life, not on this forum.
    • When emotional or angered: close down, take a break, rethink. Wait until you've cooled down.
    • Feel like ranting? Write the rant in a word document, save it. Look at it again a week or month later. Really worth the drama? Probably not.

  • Pecking orders among members are in between your ears.

    • Post counts are nice but not a sign of status.
    • Your opinion is as valid as another.
    • Discussion is not about who won. It's about who learned.

  • If your topical 'cup of tea' is not yet present, why not start a topic on it?

    • There's always a common ground in interests, you just need to find it.
    • If your topic already exists but is old, just contribute. If it's not closed or archived, discussion is ongoing.

  • Don't complain about post quantity or quality.

    • Instead, lead by example. What does good, brings good. Negativity will only lead to a downward spiral.
    • Forums grow, posts increase, places crowd. Use a system, a strategy, to keep up with the posts you're interested in.
    • Posts keep the activity of the whole community going. You might not be interested in a certain post, but someone else might.
    • The balance between longer, more serious posts and shorter, more conversational posts is subjective. Everyone experiences it differently.

  • If you end up in a conflict with a Staff-member:

    • Please realize that Staff members are human beings.
    • Remain polite. Smart-ass behavior will result in escalation.
    • Escalation will raise the severity of the punishment.
    • When receiving a warning or punishment: accept it and bear it. If you feel you have been wronged, petition a higher up in the Staff for a revision.
    • When emotional, chances of convincing Staff are slim. If you act like a lunatic, it matters little if you're right or wrong.
    • When you petition, make sure you have valid, coherent arguments.
