Scott Lynch
« on: April 29, 2008, 07:29:27 PM »

There has been no Lynch thread that I know of, a poor thing, for such a great writer. So here and now it is made, a bastion for our little discussions about these books about gentleman bastards. Though there are only two books out and a third aiming for a first quarter release in 09, I feel there must be some discussion about the author and his two current books.

Perhaps, for instance, the seemingly general feeling that the second book did not live up the first? I personally did not experience the drop in quality and I am not the only one, as I introduced a woman from another forum to the series and she enjoyed them just as much as I did. How about you? Do you feel as though the second book failed to reach the first's level?

Lynch is now one of my favourate authors, it is a shame the next book is so far away. When is the short story collection due out?

I must admit I prefered the first book, just because the style and characters were very new and novel, plus the setting was better. Don't get me wrong I loved the second book, I just enjoyed the first book a little more.

I'm in the general minority in that I actually preferred book 2. I got fully caught up in the caper, much moreso than I did in the first book. The con in the first book was pretty tame in comparison. The Don and Dona they were conning were pretty uninteresting. It was only the direct inclusion of a Bondsmage and the events of the Grey King that really interested me (as well as the boys' story unfolding in parallel, of course). The second book, while seen through a narrowed lens, seemed more epic in scope. The sheer audacity of the pair to take on the Spire kept me turning pages.

Just in case everyone doesn't know already, the second installment to the Gentleman Bastards, Red Seas Under Red Skies will be on shelves in paperback on July 29th. I haven't even read Locke Lamora, yet, and I'm still looking forward to getting it.

I read 'Lies of Locke Lamora' sometime earlier in the year, and enjoyed it well enough. I had some issues with the book, but overall it wasn't half bad. Since then, I've been harassing my library to get a copy of the sequel, with no success (*mutters about unfathomable 'non-reservable' copies*). I live in a pretty middling town, too, so there aren't that many good book stores, and I don't shop online, so...yeah, difficulties acquiring. However, I remain interested about Lynch and his works, and will endeavour to get my hands on Lies again (library copy, for the first go) and Red Seas under Red Skies.

Anyway, the reason I hit the post button was to find out what's going on with the publication of his following book, the Republic of Thieves, and why isn't there a good community concerning this author? His website looks like it hasn't been updated in a year, as well. There's barely any news, the interviews are from '06 and he hasn't updated his LiveJournal since '07. So, what's the dealio, people?

Neither his site or LJ has been updated because he has taken a hiatus from the internet to write his books. As I have said in other places, he hasn't turned in the manuscript for Republic of Thieves or The Bastards and the Knives. No one knows why, no one speaking anyway.

Lets hope Scott is not picking up all of GRRM bad habits such as missing publishing deadlines.

Scott is already good at killing off half his main characters when you don't expect it, I wonder if he got that idea from George.

just finished both Lies of Locke Lamora and Red Seas Under Red Skies, in quick succession (one of the few things long airplane rides are good for, eh?). Personally, I thought both were really really good, but in slightly different ways. The first had an amazing setting-- Camorr (while not a place I'd like to live, myself) was really well done. The second seemed to focus on a more varied characterization scheme, which was well done too. I liked the first one slightly better, but only by a tiny margin. I don't think the second 'declined in quality' or anything, it was just focussing on a different aspect of writing.

Are there any updates on when the next one or two will be released?

There is no news. Last heard, Lynch had not turned in the manuscripts for either Republic of Thieves or The Bastards and the Knives. Latest prediction for release is Summer 09.
