I heard about Divinity: Original Sin since before it was released. It was one of those games that gets a lot of hype in the geek community--something new that both appeals to our nostalgia and is a quality product in its own right. When it came out, the gaming sections of boards I visited exploded with praise for it and since I had no hope of playing it on my piece of crap, I made sure to keep the name at the back of my mind should that change.

That day has come. Well, it came last month. After years of not gaming at all and then halfheartedly gaming on consoles that were almost constantly hi-jacked by my fiancee, I decided that it was time to get rid of my decrepit laptop and build a computer that could handle gaming. Then, instead of picking up a game that would seriously test my system, I picked up the Enhanced Edition of this game during a Steam sale.

Things did not go well for a good while. For future reference, gaming on linux is an awful idea. Some people will try to tell you otherwise, but they are not to be trusted. DOS:EE actually ran on the system, so it fared better than some of the other games I purchased alongside it, but it had a habit of crashing to desktop every few minutes or during pivotal fights. It is difficult to gauge how enjoyable a game is when you face constant frustrations, but I put in thirty hours or so under those conditions so I'd say my opinion trends positive.

It is no surprise because the people behind the game pretty much offered up a little something for everyone. The entire first part of the story involves solving a murder, which requires that you take a break from your battles to do a bit of sleuthing and intrigue. There are puzzles and quests that require you put in some real work to complete. Dialogue actually matters--it isn't some two bit morality crap that you see in other games, your responses create your characters' personalities and their traits give you bonuses. Secrets and humor abound.

This is a problem for me. From character creation to gameplay, there are simply too many options on offer. I created two or three new characters before finally settling into the one that saw me through the first area and then immediately created another two after that before going back. I'm a habitual character creator and it is seriously hampering my ability to get through this game.
