Games to movies
« on: February 24, 2009, 04:01:53 AM »

Hey folks,

Over the years there's been a lot of attempts at pulling off decent movies based off games, but there's not many that have succeeded in even remotely taking what people have previously went through on their games consoles and bringing something like that to the big-screen.

The movie version of Doom comes to mind. Barring a few moments in that film, there wasn't anything close to the memorable action you found in the games.

So, why do you all think that is? And do you have any favourite movie adaptions of your games?

Eh, there hasn't been any game films to brag about.  I guess it's because with the game you become more invested because you participate, whereas a movie is just there for you to like or dislike.

Having said that, I actually liked a fair-few Game-movies. I enjoyed Doom, possibly because of smoke consumption, but it was mediocre at best.

Hitman was great. Always been a big Hitman fan, and I thougt the movie had the same feel as the game. The Uncut version is brilliant. Probably the best Game-adapted film I've seen.

Max Payne was okay, but all-inall, it was a major disappointment, mostly because of its potential. They could have really gone to town with it and they didn't. Big let down.

Then you've got your old classics like Mortal Kombat: stupid, stupid film, but hey, you gotta love that theme song. "TEST YOUR MIGHT!!!"
The Super Mario Bros movie was utter shite, but i was a kid, so I liked it. I haven't seen it since.

Then you have Street Fighter. Now the live-action version, with Jean Claude, was probably one of the worst films ever made. Ever. Forever ever? yes ms jackson, Forever ever.  The manga-version on the other hand, is one of my most favourite mangas of all time. And SF Alpha was also a good flick.

There was an April fools joke last year for a live action Zelda movie, and I was soooooooooo, soooooooo, pumped for it, but of course the joke was on me. Now THAT would have been great.

Ah, yeah. Hitman is a great one to mention, Kikori. Loved that film. Been meaning to re-watch it, as well, so I think I might do that later. I've never actually played any of the Hitman series for more than about 10-15 minutes. I'd like to give them a go now, though. One of the good things to come of the film? I wonder if old games sales went up with it...

Haven't seen Max Payne yet, but I've got it here...probably gonna hate it.

Edit: By the way, I don't think I want to see that DB movie anymore than I want to see the Zelda one. :elf_dead:

Don't hate on Zelda GO. Link will kick your Irish butt!!!

Just thought of another one - Dungeons and Dragons. Now, I know it was a board game first, but it became a video game, and then a film, so I'm including it. I loved it, but, as with most of the above, it was trashy nonsense and mostly lame. I believe there was a sequel. In the same vibe, was In the name of the King: A dungeon seige tale. Quite a good movie actually. Enough so, that you didn't have to know much about the game (which I'd never even heard of) to enjoy it.

Tomb Raider was good, most because of Angelina's bra's performence as best "supporting" actor. hahahaha, get it. lame. I never got around to seeing the second one, but I'm sure it would be, once again, all about perving on Mrs Pitt.

The Resident Evil movies were stock-standard, and I have no strong feelings either way.

It's also worth mentioning that Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li came out at the end of feb.

was aware one coming, but didn't realise it was already out.

Stars Kristen Kruek as Chun-Li

Ack, she was in Smallville. Liked her at first, but after a while she really got annoying. The casting in general for that show was a let down, but that's for another discussion...

I'm hoping she's not as bad as Chun-Li.

For the offense of liking an Uwe Boll movie, your taste has been officially invalidated.

---

I have never been a fan of the RE games, but I did enjoy the first Resident Evil film. Sadly, the second film was merely somewhat entertaining and the third was complete trash. I actually liked Doom, though I would have much preferred that Hell was involved in the whole affair instead of some sort of gene manipulation. Max Payne was one of the worst movies I have seen in some time. Even the one thing about that movie that could have been good--Mila Kunis--wasn't. Dungeons and Dragons was pretty damned horrible, but its Sci-Fi Channel produced sequel was at least slightly better. Hitman was utter trash and really should have chosen a better actor for the part, though that may just be me, since I can't stand that guy. The Dragonball movie is laughable, though not based on a game really. Zelda, on the other hand, though not a real movie (going by the IGN April Fool's video) is something that I would watch

Speaking of Street Fighter, the first one was pretty damned shit. I am not that big a fan of Kristin Kreuk, much thanks to Smallville for that one and so my expectations for the new one are set pretty low. In fact I think they are somewhere wallowing in the muck.

Tekken is out later this year. They've gone with the whole "Jin" vibe, so I'm looking forward to it. Should be about the same level of garbageness as other game films, but hey, should make for some hilarious moments.

I was flicking through channels and saw Farcry on Fox the other morning. It was probably shit. I didn't stick around to find out.

That trailer is created by a director of dance(!)-movies and Britney Spears video's. He wants to get studio interest for his view of the mortal kombat-franchise. The trailer has been written by the writer in charge of "the next" MK movie, so it's only a pitch.

Hopefully the director is able to reboot MK in his vision, it's better than the previous movies.

Prince of Persia was actually pretty cool, I thought. That Tekken nonsese was some of the worst f**king acting I have ever seen in my life and the action was shit and the people were shitheads, and the whole damn thing made me want to break my TV and on and on the complaining goes. God damn you makers of the Tekken live-action film. You suck. You are in the same category as one Michael f**king bay. f**k. f**k and so on. f**kers.
