Mass Effect series
« on: July 29, 2009, 06:40:51 PM »

...because we really need a thread on this.

I'm going to use this thread to talk heavily about Mass Effect, which is visually one of the best games ever, without a doubt, in anticipation of the sequel. Mass Effect 2 is due for release early next year.

In the mean-time, I'm going to do a few things: check out the novels, re-play the first game and keep watching kick-ass videos like this and this! :king:

Yup, Commander Shepherd's back. Can't wait.

I'm incredibly looking forwarding to the sequel coming out soon. It's going to be awesome.

Check out this video, for instance. I'm looking forward to having her part of my squad. Sure beats having Wrex grumping and growling all the time!

Edit: Very nice voice-cast they've acquired. :) Few well-known SF actors giving their voices to the characters for the upcoming game.

Game is out in less than a month, both for the US and Europe.

Really looking forward to this title. More so than I have for another game in a long while. :D

just started playing Mass Effect 1 again. never really got into the first part, partially because of the lack of time. i once had the same problem with Morrowind. couldn't get into it, but when i did, it was one of the best games i've played

Must...play...sequel.

Gah, bloody Red Ring of Death. Fortunately, I have acquired a second Xbox. This game will be played, dammit.

:D Didn't buy it.

Mass Effect is huge work for the Xbox. Not gonna find a better test for it's capabilities.

it looks amazing, i'll agree with that. but the sound the xbox makes is horrible. thinking of buying the cooler add-on thingy, so i might produce less sound. one way to lessen the sound is by putting the box flat on its side. it helps, but just a little

been playing some Mass Effect, and it's starting to grow on me. at first i was put off by the fighting in the game, but i'm starting to get the hang of it. it's annoying that it's close to impossible to get a clear shot with the sniper rifle. getting sick of standing in elevators as well. looks good so far though

Clocked up about 20 hours of ME2 this weekend. This is what happens when one chooses not to follow friend's into nefarious activities. :P Near-wrapped up with the game, I feel. I'm just picking up my final party member (Tali'Zorah). I've left her to last as I had no interest in her character in the first game, and I do not have high hopes concerning this one. After that, I'll be performing the last two remaining 'loyalty-attaining' missions, then it's off to the Collector's homeworld.

that sounds like a lot of playtime. been playing mass effect all week, but the counter is only on 11 hours. don't have any idea how many hours i've got left though

My first completed game was 39 hours almost, apparently. I can't mind it all, but playing ME2 and the constant allusions to past events and people has refreshed my mind nicely. Fits together well.

just had to kill my Krogan. feel sorry for the sucker. seems like i've got some time left then. really liking the first part. think the last game that had me this addicted was Morrowind. and that game didn't seem to end either

edit: played through Mass Effect. really liked the game, but it was pretty short in my opinion, although i didn't do a lot of side missions and basically pursued the storyline. similar games such as Morrowind or Deus Ex kept me playing way longer. sure, the graphics where great, and the voice acting as good. but, say, Morrowind didn't have voice acting, but was a longer game.

Not sure how you found it short, baz. There are longer games out there, but it's definitely above the average.

Looking through discussion threads, concerning the game, I seem to be the only admirer of Jack/Subject Zero. When the selection choice came to choose someone as my party's protector, while making my passageway through the Reaper base, she was always going to be the strongest candidate. Predictably, I went with her, and it only strengthened my love for the character. She was probably in 3/4 of my party selections during the game.

Moridin Solus had to be the strongest character in the second game, however.

I didn't mind Jack, but I p**sed her way too early in the game to get much by the way of dialogue out of her. The result being that each time I approached her in the bowels of the Normandy she'd tell me to "f**k off!"

Moridin was, indeed, the most well crafted character. Perhaps because I interacted with him more than many of the others, but it seemed that he and Thane had the most emotional journeys. Legion was lots of fun, but I got it way too late to be able to fully enjoy it as a companion (I left that recruitment mission until the very end, so only got to use Legion for it's own loyalty mission and the end run).

Hahah, you must have went with the early casual sex option, which Bioware didn't really want her for, I guess. She had a quite compelling story, actually. Came to me crying in the end. Hope she's in the third.

I messed up Thane's loyalty quest, and subsequently I lost him at the base. You're supposed to track someone on Omega that knows about his son, but I lost him in the maze above the level. So the sniper rifle was taken out. He had only a year to live, so I wouldn't have expected him to feature in the third addition, but it still blew.

No, I'd already done Miranda's loyalty mission before recruiting Jack, so as soon as she came aboard there was that confrontation between the pair and I sided with Miranda because of her connection to the Illusive Man (I was loathe to sever any ties to the organisation too early in the game in case they were needed later). It appears you can actually get out of that scene without angering either party with a high enough persuasion score, but mine wasn't quite there.

Ah, I assumed it might've been related to the sex (in a way, it kind of is), as she reacts the same way. Quite the volatile character. Have to admit, I loved it whenever she'd scream out she was going to tear up her enemies, in the middle of a battle. Bit of a pain when she bombed ahead by herself and got in trouble.
