Discovering Music
« on: April 23, 2010, 08:58:52 PM »

Hey,

I've been becoming slightly disinterested in my current collection of music, and have been considering discovering some new artists to my liking. I'm curious as to where everyone goes to online to find music to their preference. I know MySpace used to be the place, but that site fell behind years ago.

So, help?

I have Warren Ellis on my RSS reader and on twitter. That is about all I need, as he keeps a steady flow of music heading in my direction. Not for everyone, of course. Other than that, I have been using lala.com lately for my listening needs. You can only listen to each song once (unless you add it for online listening at ten cents a song), but they tend to have entire discographies that you can listen through. Probably not good for FINDING music, but certainly a good place to listen and sample once you have found some.

I do alot of clicking through the 'customers also bought' section of itunes. I'll just go to an artist I like and start clicking through that section, its surprising how quickly you end looking at stuff thats only slightly (or not at all) related in a '6 degrees of separation' kind of way.

I visit a lot of (indie) music review websites, like pitchfork.com, and listen to their recommendations. Although lately it's a lot of pretentious electro pop so it seems. I also download a lot of playlists with music from new album releases. There's a good change that of the 200 songs in a playlist, you'll end up liking five, but it'll still be worth it
