Versus
« on: October 23, 2009, 05:49:23 PM »

Good evening all.

So, I created this thread with the intention of having a series of debates, pitting one thing against another. I may keep it light and friendly, like with our first one, or I may change all-of-a-sudden and make it seriously hard. :P Time will tell.

Our first combatants to fight it out in the ring are...

Alcohol vs. Caffeine

Who would you chose? Would you throw in your wagers with the ever entertaining Alcohol, or trusty Caffeine? If you had to kick one, forever: which would it be?

Personally...I'd drop Caffeine.

I can live without coffee if I had to.... beer would be much more difficult. I'd pick alcohol.

Alcohol vs. Caffiene..... hrm.

I drink more caffiene day to day, what with the morning cup of tea (no, not a cuppa, not a cuppa, I'm not a frickin Brit!) -- in fact, haven't been drunk since, er, returning from the Land of Much Beer And Other Alcohol, 'bout four months ago -- but I don't really need either, so it still comes to a question of pleasure/enjoyment.

I'll take my tea, it tastes better.

Besides, I can be pretty "drunk"/slaphappy with no alcohol whatsoever, so....

don't know about this one. i'm not addicted to alcohol, even though i'm known to drink quite a few. i am, however, addicted to caffeine. i can go for a week without a beer, but i don't last a day without caffeine. so i think i'd prefer my coffee over the beers

Yeah, but any drinker knows it's nice to just unwind sometimes and get drunk. The fix you get through alcohol, or the way it makes you feel, is quite nice and it's addictive by it's very nature. You have to have a quite strict demeanor to avoid it's constant allure. Not sure how else to phrase it.

Yes, I'm an alcoholic in the making. :P

But while I drink tea every day and through-out, several times some days...it doesn't leave much of an impression on me, after drinking. I'm not the type to get all caffeinated.

And I'm totally brain dead, so I'm going to stop now.

in all honestly, the unwinding part of going out is being out. it's not the alcohol. i can have a good night without drinking, although given the choice, i would drink. and i definitely love the taste of a good beer (although last night i was only nauseous from drinking). but yeah, being slighty drunk can have it merits, but it doesn't give me a fix of any sort. when i'm seriously drunk, i often regret it afterwards, and not just the hangover.

i admit i always hate it when people who don't drink say the don't need alcohol to have a good time. just want to punch those people in the face. there is a truth in it though. there are night when i go out and don't drink a lot or at all. when i, say, have an important day afterwards or need to study for an exam. or when i'm with a bunch of people for whom i feel sortof responsible and want to make sure they get home safe. i never have a lesser night when i drink less or not at all

caffeine i need daily. and when i don't get it, the body protests (shivering etc). it's a physical need, so yeah, a real addiction.

Didn't actually mean getting 'seriously' drunk, baz. Just a bit. But I know what you mean about regretting drinking so much, sometimes. Thankfully I'm sensible enough and have only made that mistake a couple of times.

I can agree with that. Though I always need a drink close-by, no matter if it alcoholic or not. I guess it'd be better if I just bought a few more cokes, rather than beers. :P Wouldn't save too much, though! Even a fricking small bottle of coke is expensive in a bar. Ridiculous. I never buy any.

And like I said before, caffeine doesn't really affect me, so that's probably why I don't value it as much.

When I say it would be harder to live without beer, it is truly because of a love of the stuff. I rarely have more than 2 in one sitting, and thats only on the weekends. Some people really love to experience new foods, some people are wine lovers. I love beer. I love trying new kinds, I love the fact that there are dozens of types with different characteristics that pair with different foods. etc.

mmmmm......

Coffee on the other hand I could wean myself off of in a week or two. I don't drink it because it tastes good (although I think it does) I drink it because it wakes me up.

Heh, I wake up like a soldier. :P Doesn't take anything for me to become alert and thinking clearly.

However, I've discovered over the last few months or so, of how invaluable a good cup of tea can be for clearing my nose, which is a big point in it's favour because I have sinus problems. Usually green tea works best, especially if it's good a strong fruity smell.

Coffee is just fine to drink, as long as you throw in some honey or a lot of sugar into the cup, when you're making it up. I tend to eat something along with it, as well. So the taste doesn't linger for long. But I'm not crazy about coffee, and don't drink it regularly.

The way you make coffee is ... sweeter than any coffee I've ever tasted. It's like four spoons of sugar to one of coffee! :P

Hey, I like my bastardised coffee just fine, thank you. :P No other way to have it. Without sugar would just be...well, boring and tasteless.

I don't drink alcohol really at all anymore.  Very, very rarely.  I drink coffee several times a week because I enjoy it.  It hasn't had any sort of affect on me that I can ever recall, i.e., waking me up, etc.  If I don't get it, I don't worry about it.  I'm more of a social coffee drinker.      Fortunately, I'm not addicted to either one.

To be honest I could live without either quite easily.

I never drink coffee/tea/coke or any drink with caffeine (with the exception of when I am in a foreign country and the Sprite / Fanta is dodgy and has caffeine in it like Egypt).

I do drink alcohol socially but never by myself, even then its very rare that I am in the situation that I think it would be good to have a beer. The last time I thought that was back in Egypt when I was sat on the beach with a glorious sunset and I wanted a beer, so I went and bought 2 . Don't get me wrong I will go out with friends and have a beer, but if everyone was going out and having lemonade instead I would not mind, its not the beer I am going out for.

So if I had to choose my vote would go to Alcohol  :jester:
