My older sister got me a cookbook for my birthday, so i thought I'd try it out. I made a Classic Devil's Food Cake (two 9" layers of amazingly dark, dark chocolate cake, with pink-coloured Vanilla Buttercream frosting -- which, by the way, is incredibly rich, it has four eggs and a cup of sugar and two cups of butter O__O -- with cherries in circles in the middle and cherries in a heart on the top). Now I can't wait to eat it, too. :)
I'm also cooking some chicken breasts to make sandwiches with. Chicken and avocado and lettuce on sourdough sounds delicious right now. :)

Thanks Ed, now I'm starving. Chicken and Advocado on Sourdough would be great. Some Neil Perry on that, and I'm sorted.

Went to Me wah restaraunt last night. It's our local high-end Chinese restaraunt. was fan-bloody-tastic. Had the scallops with snowpeas and the sirloin szechuan chilli-beef. Both great dishes. not sure it was worth 180 bucks though

Most expensive meal I ever had (which my father paid for, ha) was a high-end sushi joint called Sushi Zanmai (they also have another shop, Bento Zanmai, close to the uni campus for lunches, yum). It was close to US$300... youch. For seven people, mind you, but that's still a lot of money. Dad tried not to let me see the check but I almost yelped when I peeked. O___O

Dinner time now, though, I'm off to see what da made. Yum?

I was feeling sorta nostalgic and hungry last night, so I got out this huge basket I have full of Cooking Light magazines. I used to be really obsessed with food-- there are like 20 or 30 magazines in there, and each one has little post-it note tabs stuck on the vegetarian recipes I liked, or ones I liked and used a pen to make vegan/vegetarian substitutions in. I guess it was really just a step in my recovery from [the bad times].

Anyway, I got out the magazines, and I was looking through all my favourite old recipes. I sent my dad off to buy some sweet potatoes and some lamb meat (although in the recipe I'd crossed off "lamb" and added "seitan", which is also known as "wheat meat" for the texture and taste and fact that it's made out of wheat protein)..... and then I made Sweet Potato Biscuits with Maple Butter and Lamb and Rice soup.

Oh, god, it was good.

The Sweet Potato Biscuits: Preheat oven to 400F, grease two cookie pans with butter. Microwave two yams or sweet potatoes until soft, then scrape out of shell and puree until smooth in a bowl with a half cup of milk and two-three tablespoons maple syrup, leave to cool. Sift together two cups of flour, a bit of baking powder, a bit of salt, and a bigger bit of sugar. Cut 8 Tbsp butter roughly into flour mixture until it's a coarse meal. Stir in the sweet potato mix, just until barely mixed. Generously flour a cutting board or counter surface, dump the dough on it, and clump it together in a big ball with your hands. Roll out pretty thick (about 1/2 - 1 inch thick) and use the top of a glass to cut into rounds. Place on cookie sheet-- regather and roll out and cut repeatedly, until you just have scraps. Bake 15 min. Cool on wire racks, serve with butter.

and since I know no one will try that recipe anyway, I won't post the Lamb stew recipe. Unless someone asks. Kay?

Also: just had Pasta With Chicken and Other Stuff That Needed to Be Used.

i.e., Pasta with chicken and onions and baby spinach.

p.s.: never set a thin plastic container on a hot stove burner. >.<

4 Brilliant words - TEN DOLLAR BENTO BOX!!!!!!!

There's this really great Japanese place near where I work, and they've started doing a $10 Bento Box. You get a choice of Meat and Rice (I usually get the Tatsuta Age), 4 dumplings, 4 bits of Sushi, coleslaw, a seaweed and carrot sidedish (goes great on the sushi - kinda tastes like they put seaseme oil in it), and a couple of bits of tempura. It's huge!!! and awesome!!! and, I'm gonna get one right now!!!!!

I need sugar.... I .. well,  I can drink unsweetened tea, but it doesn't really seem worth it. (I will drink sweetened tea without milk without as much of a problem). So... I want tea, and I need sugar to drink tea, and... *sighs*

I'm hungry-- seeing as I had one of those trail mix / granola / snack bars for dinner last night, I guess that wouldn't be so surprising.
Yes, I'm posting at 6:30 AM.

I think I should go get some tea. And possibly eggs.. or something... hmm.... yep. *is still mostly just waking up*

Been eating at this Japanese fastish food place, called Bento Zanmai, on Fridays for a couple weeks now. I usually get katsune udon (thick noodle soup, which normally comes with inari (sweet/salty/briny tofu) and "krab" (which I can never remember the Japanese word for). So, yea, I had that at lunch, and bought a UCC can coffee ("Come on, and Enjoy its original taste!"... sounds like a kind of lecherous-pedophile or maybe a seductive coffee, eh?).... which I just drank. Yum.

My older sis (and her boyfriend, I think?) are coming over for dinner tonight, so I should get to work on that soon. A sort of Mexican food theme-- goin' with mexican rice (fry the rice, cook it in chicken broth / salt water, the former is preferred, add canned 'chunk' tomatoes and/or sweet corn and/or chicken pieces, and cumin).... and probably burritos (refritos, cheese, onion, sour cream, tomato, corn, guac, and salsa on top...) .... and maybe cornbread (made with part maza harina and part wheat flour, plus sweet corn right before baking). *nodnod*

Sounds good, eh?

Need to get to work on that soon, I think.

EDIT: Someone went to the grocery store with a list of things to get to make dinner. Someone didn't come home with tomatoes or whole beans or corn. So that same someone made dinner, which was just small bean burritos (no cheese, onion, sour cream, tomato, corn, guacamola, nor salsa!) and cornbread.
Someone else, that is, me, was quite sulky and somewhat upset that the dinner she wanted, which would have been good, didn't happen. That same someone else didn't enjoy what was made very much. Sure, cornbread is good, but she set her hopes too high.

Last night I made a beef and bulgar (cracked boiled wheat) and veggie stew -- it was really amazing. and I think I'll be eating it for another four days or so, because I made an ENORMOUS pot of it. O.o
Also made some sweet potato biscuits. Which are quite good for breakfast, with a bit of strawberry jam. Or butter. Or maple syrup. Or any combination of AB or BC. not strawberry and syrup though, I think. O.o
