Get some lubricant on that post haste to avoid some unpleasant chafing.  Dr. Scoob has spoken.

Glad to hear it bro.

Neil Gaiman's Book Shelves, which is a good idea of what I want my collection to look like.

Looking at some of the close-ups they're even alphabetized by author, which of course they would have to be organized somehow with that amount of books. Thats awesome.  :soldier:

I've always wanted a library in my house, but I've never had the extra room to devote to it. When we went to see the Biltmore estate in N.C. recently, the library was my favorite room we saw. It was incredible, over 23,000 books in one of those two story rooms with staircases leading up to the second level.

Mind boggling that one.  Put the Biltmore as my background.  Looks pretty good.  :P

It is nice to see that my blog is doing better than I thought it would. An average of 6-10 visits a day might not seem much, but it beats out 0 by a long shot and I have days that spikes up into the teens, twenties, and thirties. Oh, and when Jay Lake links a shoddy post, I end up in the seventies. As I continue, and hopefully improve, I can only hope that the readership grows right along.

My mum killed our parrot, Clyde..
Without asking anyone else.
My sister and I are upset and saying so.
My father is upset and not saying so.

I just hit 2000 posts.

Also, I am a member of Westeros and have been active there for quite a while. Great place if you are looking for a lit forum.

At the risk of being an old fashioned hypocritical fuddy-duddy...

Spoiler:  • show
....and with all due respect to the members and our freedom of speech here, one wonders if the content of some posts is appropriate for this venue.  Some of the conversations in chat can leave you breathless from laughing so hard, but they just don't seem to play out the same when immortalized in print, i.e., some posts in the Ich bin ein Berliner! thread.  Our three word story can get disgusting at times too.  Funny perhaps, but disgusting none the less.

Consider the fact that some members here were but 14 when they found this site, I think it's safe to assume that there may be minors perusing these threads.   I think the true purpose of this site could be irreversibly compromised if a parent were to learn their kids were exposed to such things here.

Maybe a compromise could be reached and such things could be put in the spoiler tag so as to not be so obvious?

What would be perfect is if there were an age/DOB prompted feature, that activates at registration, that denies access to some of the threads or posts.  Nothing obvious at sign in, just an automatic feature.  Only those that lurk and discover such a feature, prior to registration, would be able to lie to get past it.  Either way, it would relieve the responsiblity I believe we all have as caretakers of this site.

You may begin throwing vegetables now.

That's always been the case on here. I was a teenager when I first joined the Hall, and yet I found the messages and chat humour just great amusement. Perhaps I was a bit more mature, for my age, but I don't think it'd ever be a problem. Plus, it's always been a majority thing. As long as we have mostly adults around, they'll want to talk like adults and not bow to the wishes of staff members enforcing rules with hypothetical kiddies in mind.

Edit: And anyway, this is the last place parents would complain about. There's thousands of websites with more disturbing content out there. And I don't really think our content is that inappropriate, anyway. :p

I don't feel it gets too out of hand here in comparison to the web overall, and this is coming fro a parent with 3 kids 15 and under. There's far more inappropriate stuff sitting on you tube.

Heh. This place--and chat as well--is pretty tame compared to other places I visit and how things used to be when we had other members running about.

i would agree that we're pretty tame. even in chat we're often quite tame, which we don't need to be, since it's not a official chatroom. just a bunch of loonies running the place. and even pg14 would include profanity.

Yea, I was one of those 14-when-joined-ers, and this might come from the view point of one who was irreversibly set on the Path of Darkness by about age 12 -- trust me, slash fic is a reeeeaaally good way to set a curious 12 year old on said Path -- but this forum is just friends chattering, really, and friends who tend to chatter maybe a bit creatively, but ... well, it's nothing I'd be afraid of my sister seeing, and she's 14. It's nothing I'd be afraid of her seeing since about ... maybe 11 years on her part?

Unfortunately, I have no vegetables to throw at you, unless you'd like some fresh organic local-to-here corn. Or perhaps you'd like a few Colorado peaches?
