Watched "Seraphine" last night -- really good, in an artsy way. It's about Seraphine Louis, a French painter/madwoman who worked 1915-1930. She did strange and beautiful paintings of plants and flowers ... and the film itself was strange and beautiful.

Then we watched "Prisoners" -- a thriller with Hugh Jackman (et al) doing bad things after a kidnapping. Not great; the antagonists motives were unclear and it was a bit gorier than I prefer. And the director's goal was too encompassing, it seemed he wanted us to think about vigilantism vs. legitimate justice working up to something about god vs. anti-god. Or.. something like that. Mrrmph.

Watched 'Transcendence'. It was alright, not wholly satisfying. It felt like a film that would've been released during the 90's...

Watched "The Book Thief", I really liked it alot. Little girl stole the show. I'm very familiar with WWII history though so that may have added to my enjoyment since I knew all the context and background.

Also watched "The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug" which I expected to like less than I did. I actually thought it was pretty good, better than the 1st.

I watched The Desolation of Smaug for the first time the other night, too, and I also expected to like it less than I did. I think I had low expectations from all the grumblings about it when it first came out.

Can't say I agree about The Book Thief, though. I found it a bit boring, but that was just in comparison to the book. Have you read it? I thought the straight realism of the movie stripped all the magic out of the story. I felt like it should've been more quirky.

Went to see 'Edge of Tomorrow" last night in the tiniest theater you ever saw. There were 100 seats total (I counted) and only 4 people including me. Was on business travel in Westminster MD, a very small town.

Anyway I liked it, plus points for Emily Blount and the story, minus for Tom Cruise being cast in yet another Sci Fi leading role. I mean come on, are there not any other actors to do these leading roles?

Anyway, I thought it was good, the 3D was also pretty good and not distracting at all, which led me to believe it was maybe that it was such a small screen. Maybe 3D works better in smaller screens?

I watched "Her" last night. My wife was really bored, she hated it. I on the other hand thought it was amazingly creative and thought provoking. I thought the acting was incredible, and the subtext of evolving artificial intelligence was really well done. Its a very deep story of both personal and technological growth and raised some interesting questions about where technology might go. It also highlighted what I think is a very relevant question of human nature, and how we will respond as a society to the availability of 'perfect' relationships that are not based on interaction with real people. How many people would opt to have a virtual mate instead of a real one? Where does that lead? Would human nature take over?

Not sure its for everyone, but I thought it was great.

Agreed. I thought it was the best film of last year. I was surprised by how many people that were so put off by it, especially given how relevant it is.

I totally see what Squirrel is saying about The Book Thief. Even reading the opening pages shows you how much difference there is between the book and (what I imagine could be done in) the movie. Minor:
Spoiler: show
The book is actually narrated by Death, who had a very very different voice in the trailer, if that was supposed to be a narrator...
. I read it for a class on young adult literature -- which is odd, because it was originally released as adult fiction and then in the States as YA fic. Also, it's a story about information and a story about books, so it seems a bit odd to view it as a movie. Maybe that's just me.

Also! It's interesting how sympathetic it is to the suffering of the Germans, which I don't think comes across in much coverage of the historical events. The only other one I can think of is Slaughterhouse V which is partially about the Dresden firebombing and the starving civilians in that city. What did you think about that aspect, Vega?

Her was awesome. Especially as someone who was, for a very long time, in a Skype-enabled relationship, it really rung some bells for me. Maybe that's one difference between people who 'get it' and those who don't? (Obviously not all people who got it had that background, but idea of technology being involved in dating is pretty much mainstream, so partly reception based on viewers' opinions of that phenomenon in our society?)

Went to see Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Joe liked it a lot more than I did. The live-motion animation was absolutely fantastic, as you'd expect, and the script was good. There was something about it that just didn't really deal with the topics (animal cruelty ~~ racism, for instance) as well as it thought it did. It was trying to be an early fall film rather than a summer blockbuster, but I just don't think it succeeded at bridging that gap.

Also, why is no one talking about Guardians of the Galaxy?? That was awesome. :D

been watching some movies lately. saw the latest in the Bourne series the other day. actually quite enjoyed that, even though it got some bad press.

saw Her yesterday. loved how it was filmed and a great performance by Phoenix. the story was all sorts of weird. don't quite know what 'getting it' means. can't see how this is anything like being in a long distance relationship.

saw Snowpiercer today. doing all the things right that the hunger games is doing wrong. a scary view on humanity

also watched The Amazing Spiderman today. didn't really enjoy that. liked Sam Raimi's versions better.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 - Good, but not nearly as good as the first. The writing just wasn't as good the second time around.

Knights of Badassdom - This movie is horrible, but you should watch it because it is the sort of bad that is hilarious. I can see why this film has been delayed so many times. What I can't see is how they managed to get anyone with a recognizable name to act in it.

Guardians of the Galaxy - Not the best Marvel movie, but the most enjoyable. It is hilarious and kind of cheesy and the action is decent enough, but the acting (Gamorra, especially) and writing (dialogue/pretty much everything involving Amy Pond) were occasionally cringe-worthy. It could have done with a slower pace, too, but I get that there was a lot of story to tell and only so long people can be expected to sit still.

I love Knights of Badassdom. True, it's the sort of horrible that's hilarious (and watching it under the influence makes it so much better), but I really got a kick out of the whole thing.

Haha, glad you agree!

And I'd just like my add my voice to the chorus of approval for Her. I was totally gripped. I particularly enjoyed the subtle details that evoked the film's vision of the future.

Seen lots of movies lately, but another standout was Interstellar. Was anybody else a fan of that? Reminded me a lot of that Jodie Foster movie Contact, but better. Some fascinating ideas in that one.

Just got back from watching The Imitation Game with the girlfriend (in gold class - our boss gave us a voucher for Christmas!)

Great, great movie! Can't believe the impact of one man on not only the war, but also the rest of the world through the invention of the computer. It also did a great job of making you really feel the injustice of the positions of women and gay people in that society.

On the other hand, I'd heard a bit of controversy over its historical inaccuracies, and I just looked them up. That really bugs me. I'm not usually a stickler for that sort of thing. I mean, I can deal with it in movies about William Wallace or whatever from eight-hundred years ago, but this was so recent. It just seems disrespectful to me somehow to change such recent and important events for dramatic effect and narrative expediency. I really think our expectations of biopics and other 'based on a true story' films should be different to those of fiction, so that directors and writers didn't feel compelled to make these changes.

I recently stopped watching "Everywhen" part way through. The name is amazing, the story promising but ultimately poorly executed, and the acting is about on par with the current talents of Ötzi the Iceman.

Squirrel, what inaccuracies were there?

Pops: never heard of that show before.  What is it about exactly?

Uh... it was about... accidental travel between parallel universes? I think? It might have just been about really bad writing...
