Quote from: IMDB rating 3.2/10
A boy must fight his way from an alternate reality, back to his own, to save his suicidal 5-year old brother; when 3 billion people are reported missing.
/
Everywhen is when everything happens at the same time. In the year of 2077 a large count of the worlds population, 3 billion, suddenly disappears. Did they all go to a parallel reality? A 17 year old boy forces himself back from this reality, to try to save his 6 year old brother.

In its defense it was shot by 17 year olds from Norway, using amateur actors only and a budget of <10k US$.

Ya think Ötzi was an amateur actor?  ;) :jester:

I saw the movie The Floating Lives (Canh dong bat tan). I have mixed feelings about this movie. Although it's a drama and I'm not really a drama fan, I found it was sort of interesting and I kept watching. But at the same time couldn't help feel like some kind of disaster tourist. (Not because the movie is bad.) As for the ending, well....it's an effin' tragedy.

Squirrel, what inaccuracies were there?

I just read the Wikipedia list. I was going to summarise, but can't really do it better than they already did it there haha.

I gave Horns a watch after stumbling across it on Netflix. I was actually hoping to rent it last night, but Redbox isn't distributing it and I'm not driving across town and paying who knows how much from the local place that sprung up as Blockbuster was hurtling toward closure.

It was good. The voice-over was probably the worst thing about it... it didn't feel right or needed and I certainly would have preferred it not be there. Other than that? Eh. I think the acting fell flat a few times throughout and my vague memories of the book seem to recall a better ending, but these aren't killer issues by any means.

Why did you think this one was good compared to the previous Disney/Pixar movies?

thought Big hero 6 was a clever film. a laugh and a tear, without being too pedantic or sentimental.

pedanting and sentimental traits that can be ascribed to pixar btw.

can't remember a single Pixar film that i really enjoyed and i think i watched most of them, the worst being Finding Nemo which was quite the train wreck. haven't been particular fond of disney movies either. Wreck it Ralph, the last disney flick i saw, for instance, was a movie i couldn't even finish.

that doesn't mean i dislike animated movies; far from it. my favorite being Surf's Up, made by Sony Pictures Animation. a company that also made An Adventure with Pirates!, which is also brilliant.

Interesting,  I never experienced their movies in a negative way.  In what way do you think Pixar is pedantic? Or did that only apply to wreck it ralph?

minus for Tom Cruise being cast in yet another Sci Fi leading role.

But he dies.... Lots of times. That has to be a bonus yes? Any way, I watched it yesterday and yeah I liked it too all things considered.

l saw the Knights of Badassdom reacently as well. Oh dear! That was such a rubbish film but actually I still really enjoyed it because the sterotype Live Role Players were oh so accurate!  :jester:

I didn't like Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc, or Cars. I'd say that they were meant for a different audience, a much younger one, but there are plenty of people my age who are fans of these films. I don't have anything against Pixar though... not yet. I do think they need to get away from sequels (Monsters and Cars have landed sequels already, Nemo is getting one, and Toy Story has yet another on the way) and get back to original movies (after an Incredibles sequel), but I understand that they need to make a profit and sequels are easy pickings.

---

As for the films that I have watched:

A Fantastic Fear of Everything - Simon Pegg playing an author whose research into Victorian era murders has turned him paranoid. Not great, but there is a decent amount of dark humor and it'll probably tickle the fancy of anyone who likes the 'series of unfortunate events' narrative where anything that can go wrong for a character does go wrong.

Snowpiercer - Almost two hours of mediocrity. It is ridiculous, which helps, but it is still a mediocre movie. It doesn't really do anything well. The fights are kind of boring, the dramatic moments are over the top, and the twists are trite when not obvious. Still, I've seen a lot worse from films with bigger budgets. I'm not sure that I'd recommend this. There has to be a better way to spend a couple hours.

Yes!

As for me: Rush Hour last night (for the first time for me, eighth plus time for GO), and Ex Machina not long before that. Both good, in different ways....

I agree. This sentiment would outrage the guy who enthusiastically recommended it to me, but I could just say I "didn't get it". Didn't get what he thought was so good, anyway.

Watched 'Babadook' last night. I was worried I wouldn't like it due to all the hype, but it delivers.

I watched 1960's Black Sunday, which was surprisingly brutal in its opening moments. My experience with black and white horror films comes from a handful of creature features aired on cable when I was a kid, which were always fairly tame. I was not expecting a witch to have a mask nailed onto her face by means of a wooden sledge hammer before being sent to burn at the stake. However, it is rather tame from then on. There are deaths in the course of the witch's revenge, but they appear off screen and never come close to approaching the violence against her in the opening.

Barbara Steele plays both Asa, the witch, and Katia, her descendant and the key to Asa's true resurrection. Steele manages to come across as sinister in both roles. Katia's first appearance, not moments after the disturbance of Asa's tomb, had me believing the witch was already up and about and beginning her revenge. Subsequent appearances may have dispelled that feeling, but Katia never quite seems to be innocent young woman she was meant to be. Even worried over her father's failing health, she seems suspicious. This, of course, does not play a role in the film. Katia is just Katia and there is nothing dastardly or sinister about her. I doubt this effect was intentional, but I liked wondering about it and can't complain at all about Steele's performance.

It was a decent watch, though I am not certain that it was interesting enough to keep my attention on its own.

I was amused by one scene in particular. Two men are examining a body on the bank of a river when these lines are exchanged:

Man 1: That's who it is. Poor Boris, he certainly looks terrible. How on earth did he end up here?
Man 2: The river. Can't you see he's dead?

I made it half of the way through that Halo anime anthology (think Animatrix) and turned it off because I was bored. Origins, the first two shorts, look pretty cool mostly thanks to the body horror of the Flood, but they are 100% exposition that is only so interesting. The second short, The Duel, might have been interesting if it wasn't for the heavy Japanese influence and the horrible, horrible art style. Homecoming, the third short, was eh. Odd One Out, the last one I watched, was essentially a DBZ parody and ridiculous... it was also the best one of the lot despite the urge to facepalm.

Going to make a rare cinema visit this week to see "Brooklyn". Haven't been in six months or something, so seems like a good one to end the streak. Anyone seen it?

I've hardly seen anything lately. My interest in cinema has largely died, but I did watching " Whiplash" last week. Pretty intense little film. Simmons and Teller had great chemistry.

The Expanse's finale is on tonight and I'm so hyped that I can't concentrate on the anime that I want to watch, so I headed over to Netflix to see what I could turn up. I ended up watching 'Turbo Kid', a post-apocalyptic film out of Canada that is kind of like if you took a cheesy superhero show for teens from the late 80s/early 90's and turned into a gory grindhouse film while amping up the cheese. It is neither good nor bad, but rather ridiculous and entertaining. Reminds me of the likes of Hobo with a Shotgun or Rubber.

A few evenings ago, I watched Inside Out (good film! however, didn't cry, as promised, quite disappointed) and tried to watch Things We Do In The Shadows (a vampire mockumentary out of New Zealand that was just kind of odd, and didn't keep me from falling into an exhausted and somewhat tipsy slumped over sleep on the lap next to me. Apparently, in my sleep, I warned the lap owner not to fart.

A few evenings before that, the new Cinderella (Richard Madden fanclub!!) and Magic Mike XXL and laughed, hard, the whole way through. Magic Mike was surprisingly good in a certain way -- raunchy of course, and blatant as f**k fanservice on basically every single shot -- but sorta adorable and funny at the same time. Plus, sexy guys with very little clothing. *drool*

Meet the Patels. It was pretty good and I laughed through most of the movie. Finally a comedy movie on Netflix that doesn't melt my brain away by fart jokes and various other sort of American humor of that level that is a waste of precious viewing time.

Amelie - A rewatch. Love this film.

Witching and Bitching - Spanish-language horror-comedy about a We Buy Gold heist gone terribly awry. I got a few good laughs out of it before it went off on its horror twist, but it is a pretty mediocre film. As an added bonus, it goes on so much about how awful wives are and how unfair the system is toward men--in terms of divorce, custody, and alimony--that I imagine it received an MRA Golden Fedora.

The other day I skipped work and went to see Gods of Egypt. I liked it, good action flick. I feel it left openings for spinoff though that I'm not sure would be so good
