What You Watching II
« on: July 07, 2006, 05:27:04 AM »

Ok. I know we've had similar threads regarding tv shows, in particular a specific thread for fave cartoons. But I'm not interested in any particular genre. I want to know what your fave tv shows are? period. What shows have you bought dvd boxsets for? What shows do you wish would be released on dvd? What show would you recommend as a "must-see" to somebody?

See where this is goin?...

I'll start us off.

1. Firefly - I've always been a fan of Whedon. His characterizations and dialogue have always been top notch, but with Firefly we saw him take a step away from his usual target-audience and attempt something fresh and original. Containing one of the greatest gang of misfits to ever grace the screen, Firefly had the potential to surpass the established "greats" as the best ever sci-fi show.

2. Deadwood - What to say? If you haven't seen Deadwood yet, you're missing out. The series is a Western set in the 1870s in Deadwood, Dakota Territory. At the time, Deadwood (a real town in the modern state of South Dakota) was little more than a makeshift camp, but it was a popular destination for those prospecting for gold in the Black Hills. Casting a giant shadow over all is a blood-soaked king, Gem Saloon owner Al Swearengen, possibly the best, most complex, and mesmerizing villain seen on TV in years. Over time, each of the characters will forge alliances and feuds, cope with disasters (such as smallpox), and move - almost invisibly but inexorably - toward some semblance of order and common cause. Making it all worthwhile is David Milch's masterful dialogue - often profane, sometimes courtly and civilized, never perfunctory - and the brilliant acting of the performers.

3. Scrubs - One of the funniest shows on tv. A cast of relative unknowns when the show began, they gelled into a great team. All the performances are top-notch, most notably those of Dr. Cox and The Janitor. Despite the typically irreverant humor found in the series, almost every episode contains a strong moral message (yet done in style). A must see program for everyone.

4. My Name Is Earl - A new favourite of mine, but featuring one of my all time favourite actors (Jason Lee). The premise is pretty basic; a guy's done wrong all his life and when something finally goes right for him karma steps in and has its say. So then Earl decides to make a list and repay all the people he wronged in his past. But as the saying goes, "Karma's a b****" and completing his list might just take a while.

5. The Simpsons - A classic. Nothing more need be said.

I left out a whole bunch of shows that I enjoy and tried to stick with those that are my absolute faves. I also didn't want to be at the computer for 3 hours thinking of shows I like, so this'll do for now. If I see something I want to change then I'll edit later.

note - these arent in order of preference, if they were firelfy would be on here(didnt mention it because alrin already has). these are series/boxsets ive watched recently and enjoyed.

1) STAR TREK, DS9 - i just bought all seven series of deep space nine off ebay for £55... bargain me thinks. this is THE BEST star trek series in my opinion by a long way. im six episodes in and loving every minute, its even better than i remembered... i even managed to put up with q's appearance early on... i really hate that guy!!! anyway, highly recommended in my book. one of my favourites.

2) ANGEL - one of the guys in work just gave me a shot of season 1 & 2 and i have to say i was impressed. its definitely no firefly(dont know where whedon pulled it from) but still worth a watch.

Spoiler: show
interesting point i found on imdb, the guy who played the character of doyle, glenn quinn, was killed off because he had a drink and drugs problem... he was dead inside a year. unintentionally, because he obviously wasnt dead yet, the episode 'hero' somehow becomes all the more poignant... a very good episode... if more than a little depressing

- season 1 spoiler

more to follow...

Uhhh.... Seinfeld, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel, The Simpsons....

Seinfeld is just hilarious, as are/were the simpsons. Buffy is a good show once you get into it, especially later in the series. the urther from season one you go, the less concerned the episodes are with teen issues and vampires. It diversified and got better. Angel is awesome for a spin off.

I also am ashamed to admit I have succumbed to the frustrating plots of shows like 24 and Lost.

I don't watch much t.v. but I have been following Lost, altough I'm pretty p**sed off with it at this stage. I've started watching Prison Break (which has just started here) and that seems interesting. I'd like to say I watch scrubs, but its been ages since I've remembered it was on and actually seen it...

24. One of the greatest most awesome shows ever. Try and watch a whole series in one go. It's bloody hard to do.

I would have to say my top 2 shows

Firefly which Alrin has already gone into and I am currently re-watching

Arrested Development - Easily the best ever US comedy with so many in jokes and references to modern culture.

Other favs

Curb Your Enthusiam - Awesome show from the creator of Seinfeld, much better than Seinfeld though.
24 - Whats more to say, great show.
Deadwood I am loving, I am going to watch the Season 2 finale tonight.
BattleStar Galactica the new series is really great.

I actually caught a few eps of the new stargate recently. It's... different. Totally lost, I actually took the time to read up on the current situation of the series and was pleased to see how the myth of the ancients has grown (especially after not having seen the show for years). Maybe I'll even start watching it regularly again.

You should it is still a great show. The addition of the two leads from Farscape I think help keep the show fresh.
I saw the season finale of Deadwood Season 2 and it was really good. I will start watching season 3 ASAP.

Yeah it was an awesome ending tonight. I can't believe how good Tennant is. I also can't believe that I am also going to miss Billie Piper.     Who knew?

I agree, a great episode of Doctor Who, I have never really watched the show apart from the Second Season which just finished and I was impressed, a bit corney but overall good.

I've seen a few episodes of Arrested Development. If it was on earlier I'd definitely watch it more often. What's Curb Your Enthusiasm about? Better than seinfeld you say? I havent heard of it, whtas the premise of the show? is it about nothing?

At the moment Prison Break is my favourite tv show. Big fan of Scrubs, and I like My Name is Earl too. It can be a little hit and miss for me sometimes. Not sure if i'd ever buy the full series. And i'm a big fan of the Sopranoes too, which is ending soon. *shrugs* It's all been done, so I guess it's a good decision.

Ugh, Ratings season will soon come to an end her in Aus, and our televisions will be filled with more crap than usual. I do hope they put Seinfeld back on, but I doubt it will ever return to commercial television again... or at least for a while.

My fav all time show - Ally Mc Beal

Also enjoy investigation and forensic stuff like CSI; law and order; Bones - nothing like good ole suspense and detective work.

Oh and is it at all possible that anyone else around here is shallow enough to be fans of shows like footballers wives or desperate house wives... OR is it just me?
