I think he mentioned in an interview that RaDL and AtGoD were supposed to be more of a lead up to the last series, bringing in a new character (or characters) which would allow people to be reintroduced to all the major characters and the story elements that have led up to the final rift war. In that sense, I'd easily say it's succeeded as parts of the story brought us as far back as the first chapter of Magician... But then again, I still feel like Magnus is a bit of a hollow character. I seem to recall he got his heart broken and I guess he's now suffering a lot of grief like Pug, but... well I guess we've just never really had the story told with his perspective and thoughts like we've had from the others. But we've had hints along the way that he's someone significant considering how he's dealt with the Gods.
*meh* I recall Ray mentioning that the 4th riftwar was short but bloody, it was certainly short but unless we count the Star Elves' off-world losses, it certainly didn't seem that bloody for Midkemia (particularly the last battle).
Heck, I'm looking forward to the last series where Ray can finally stop dropping hints and suggestions and really start revealing what its all lead up to over the years of writing.
