I just finished all 30(I think) books
« on: January 12, 2016, 10:36:55 AM »

*This post will contain spoilers from the whole Riftwar Cycle so just a warning(and I don't want the whole post inside a spoiler*

Spoiler: show
I honestly am at a loss for words about what I should say about these book.
So many people died and so many didn't(Miranda, Nakor, Pug(Kind of))
The ending was so sad yet so happy at the same time, although Hal being the king of the isles was quite predictable, I knew it would happen when he fell for Princess Stephanie.
There were A LOT of inconsistencies in the series, especially with the dread, although maybe I misunderstood what was happening.

About the dread(Please correct me if I'm wrong): At some point it says that beings in the 7th circle of hell are so much worse than the dread, however in the last book the dread are considered to be essentially the opposite of all other things so that nothing else can be more negative(or worse) than them and consume more.
(Sorry I couldn't explain that much better, although I am sure the Feist also had a lot of difficulty trying to explain the concepts in his novels, such as the 'mind')

I will add more later.

Hey Macros, cool to hear you finished the series and letting us know what you're thinking of it. I still have to read the final book, so I will steer away from the spoilers (thank you for using the tag), but some here read the final book as well,  so should be able to discuss more in detail.

I haven't finished it yet. I think I need to reread from the beginning so I don't miss anything

Hey Lizard man! I'll just throw spoilers on all of my post, so I can talk freely...

Spoiler: show
So with the Dread, something you have to remember is that their world had virtually been turned... If you want to use the words negative, positive like you said, then there world would be the negative of the one our heroes reside in. Similar to each level of Hell being worse so too the residents of these places.

I really need to re-read the last book, but from my memory and understanding of what happened, Midkemia was in line to become much like the Dreads world, and others of its kin, and inevitably be swallowed by the darkness. It's a bit of a dumbed down way of looking at it, and it lacks a lot of the politics of the beginning of the series, but it is essentially a fight between the light and dark like  so many other works of fiction tend to be.

It's late here, I'll post more when my mind is spit firing more vividly.

Spoiler: show

When I was talking about the dread I mean that at some point it says that beings reside in the 7th circle of hell, below the dread, however in the later books dread are seen as being from the lowest circle as the mind and the dread will join to create
a state where the universe as known in the series no longer exists. That means there can be nothing below the dread.

The way I thought of it is that if the universe exists between 1 and -1(on something like a number line), 1 is the mind, -1 is the dread and Midkemia is somewhere around 0, which kind of confuses me if Feist still thinks there is something below the dread.
It is possible that the version of reality depicted in the earlier books was how the characters saw the universe, however I don't remember it being writen like that.

Spoiler: show
Inconsistencies definitely abound through the whole series, from major to minor. I'm pretty sure Macros is right about the Dread, the ones that are encountered say in Mac Mordain Cadal or at the City Forever are said to be from one of the lower hells, whereas the Dread that are terrorising the Anoredhel in the later books are said to be from the void that the dragons travel through and that exists in the empty spaces in the Hall and between rifts.
