Conclave of Shadows
« on: February 27, 2005, 03:54:05 AM »

Hi there!
I just discovered this messageboard! And since I'm a huge Feist fan, I'm quite happy about this turn of events!

A while back I created a weblog on which I review fantasy novels. Since then, I've been offered the position of "official" book reviewer for an independent magazine titled Gryphonwood Press.

I was thinking about reading the CONCLAVE OF SHADOWS series soon, so that I can review them on the blog and the magazine. But before I do that, I wanted to hear your thoughts concerning the series. I absolutely loved the RIFTWAR SAGA, as well as the SERPENTWAR SAGA. But the last trilogy, although good, didn't quite make it for me the way the previous two had. Which I guess is why I haven't read CONCLAVE OF SHADOWS just yet. Can anyone give me the lowdown!?! Any info would be welcome!

And if anyone is interested, you can check out my blog at www.fantasyhotlist.blogspot.com. Let me know what you think of the reviews and articles.

Have a great weekend, all of you!!!

Hello, welcome to the board. I just checked out your site, you have some good articles and reviews on the site. I especially liked the article on the Travelling, I am currently 4 months into a 1 year around the world trip. In Sydney currently.

Ok about the Conclave series, in my view its much better than the Krondor books, though not as good as the original Riftwar and Serpantwar. I reckon the books get better in the series as they go on, so my fav was Exiles Return.

The Hall has recently relaunched its own Fantasy/Scifi/Horror News/Review site. This can be found over at worldsoffantasy.net. We are still looking for news reporters and reviews for the site if you are interested.

Hopefully see you around the Hall more in the future.

Hey Patrick, welcome to the HoW. I think you'll like this board and in particular like one of our members; Wolfie. Also I think you will like the site Coe helped set-up. Some reviewers for there would be some welcome help. I look forward to seeing more of you around here, and i'll read some your stuff on your site.

I personally enjoyed reading the Conclave of Shadows series. Although I did not like it as much as the Serpentwar saga (which is a favourite of mine) I felt the series was another success for Ray. A lot of people are more 'opinionated' about the series than I. I'll leave them to you. lol

Talon was great. Exile's was better.

Foxes though... what a pile of garbage.

I'd have to agree with Alrin. The first was brilliant, a great new introduction to a new kinda world and a new view upon it. Foxes was just like...
Spoiler: show

And Exile was again a great new look upon an unfamiliar place in the world.

Hi guys!
Thanks for the warm welcome! I have to admit that you haven't been all that encouraging concerning CONCLAVE OF SHADOWS. I guess that's why that series did not generate the sort of buzz that has been associated with Feist's other works. Even though I'm going to read it for sure (I am a fan, after all!!!), it think it can wait a while...

I should finish Hobb's SHIP OF DESTINY tonight, or tomorrow at the latest. So I guess that the next review will be of Stephen R. Donaldson's RUNES OF THE EARTH. Has anyone read it yet?

Since many Feist fans lurk in these parts, does anyone know what he plans to write next???

As for my reviews perhaps appearing on worldsoffantasy.net, I would be delighted! The blog was created to spread the word about what's good and what's not. So the more people I can reach, the better! Get back to me at patstd1@aol.com, and we'll discuss the possibilities!

As for the weblog itself (www.fantasyhotlist.blogspot.com), all are welcome to check it out and let me know their thoughts! Perhaps my posts "La crème de la crème" and "Close but no cigar" can help you find something you'd like to read! And I'm always happy to receive recommendations!

Have a good one!

Patrick, there is information on the next series by Ray titled the Darkwar Saga. The info can be found here. Beware of spoilers for the Concvlave series through as its set directly after the end of Exiles Return.

How are you finding the Ships series by Hobb? I thought it was awesome after the first books. You read the Tawny man series yet?

I will contact you tomorrow hopefully about the reviews on WoF. Busy at work today.

Yeah, as Coe said we have already discussed in a fair amount of detail what is going to happen with the blurb that Amazon gave us. I honestly didn't find the Conclave Series that bad, it was brilliant actually. But compared to Fiest's other masterpieces it fell short.

Hi Coeshaw!
Just finished the LIVESHIP TRADERS series, and it was terrific! I haven't read the TAWNY MAN just yet. But I will probably read it soon! A full review of all three volumes of the LIVESHIP TRADERS can be found on my blog (should anyone be interested). My next review will be Donaldson's THE RUNES OF THE EARTH.

As far as the reviews are concerned, get in touch with me and we'll discuss it!

Thanks to all of you for sharing some feedback concerning CONCLAVE OF SHADOWS. I've heard that there will be about 7 more books set in Midkemia. Is there any truth in that???

3 in the next series - the 3rd riftwar.
then say another 2 trilogies after that dealing with the 4th and 5th riftwars.
plus the combined krondor novel equals 10.

but look at the legnth of time he's been writing, and the books he's put out.
we have, what, 21 books or so. and only 2 riftwars covered.

I can't imagine him not writing a few more bridge books [ala PotB/KB/Conclave] in between those riftwars. plus any future collaborations he may do

i think i remember hearing something about 10 more, but i think that was 10 more 'major/main series/RIFTWAR' books.

then again, i could be wrong. joe would be the man to ask.

Yeah i heard that aswell, i would say it is only 10 more books for the Riftwars, not for his whole collection of Medkimia and Beyond. But Ray has said himself that he would like to do more Co-Written books, and i would say he would do alot of between books aswell.

I think he mentioned there would be only 10 major books or less dealing with the 3/4/5 th Riftwars. Plus any number of co-authored , Legend style books etc. Ray has been wanting to write a few non fantasy books for a while so he might do a few of them eventually.

I just finished the second book and am starting the third. I like it quite a bit so far. I seem to remember reading somewhere here that it was not well regarded(?)

Question below in the spoiler section.

Spoiler:  • show
I thought the plot line was pretty cool, the time in prison surprised me, although the whole sprouting a new arm thing was kind of lame, but I didn't like the fact that it was cut off in the first place. What story is it where the evil wizard Varen is introduced the first time? He is clearly a character we are supposed to know.

So far I have read the Riftwar, Krondor's Sons, Serpentwar, and first two of Conclave.
