Erik Von Darkmoor's age
« on: February 04, 2005, 05:29:31 PM »

I was re-reading SOADQ and at the beginning it states that Erik is 15 years old.  By the time of SOABC I remember him telling someone that at 25 he had his fill of killing and felt old.  As far as I recall there isn't 10 years between the stories.

Thoughts?

Yep, I noticed that too. I think the 15 was a typo and that he's actually 25 throughout the entire book.

That's possible, but I highly doubt it.  After all, it also says that he's been having strange feelings lately about the girls in the village.  If he's only having those feelings at 25 then i'd find that pretty bizzarre.

btw, I didn't actually mean the PM thing in that other post.  It was obviously a joke.

Hmm, then maybe the 25 is the type. I don't know though, he's one beefy 15 year old!

And joke it may be, but legally we won't take any chances.

The time period between the Serpantwar books is at least 5-10 years in my view.
Spoiler: show
Each voyage to Novindus is at least 6 months if I remember, plus all the training, Eriks advancement through the Army, Roos business empire did not happen overnight but over years. Maybe 25 is a bit much but 22 I could believe.

From what I remember, when they burned the shipyards in Maharta they thought they would get about 10 years and if I recall correctly, Nakor mentions that they got more like 3 or 4 years.  So if that is the case then he's not yet 20 by the time Shards comes around.

I thought chapter two of SoaDQ was a year or so after chapter one (where his age is mentioned I think). And how much time passed between Nathan taking over the forge and Erik leaving Ravensburg?

I think it all adds up for the saga to span 10 years, and I think it is entirely feasible to believe he was a big 15 year old, and followed through to a gifted 25 year old military man.

History was like that.

I think Erik is 15 years old when the story begins, but then you have to think...Roo - small for his age and 15. Why would they take him to Novindus? I'm not too sure about this matter...perhaps someone can clear it up completely?

There would have been some difference from the beginning of the novel to the landing at Novindus - 3 years is not outrageous to assume. And while he was skinny, it doesn't mean he wasn't fit - I am living proof of that after all hehe

Serpentwar Saga Spoiler.....
Spoiler: show
Roo was taken to Novindus because he was a Quick, Sneaky little bastard with abit of a attitude. Besides, they just wanted ppl to fight whether they die or not, Roo was going to be hung so it didnt matter. And i also agree that the Serpentwar went for 10 years.

Yeah
Spoiler: show
Erik was definatly 15 or 16 at the start of the SerpentWar Saga, it clearly states that. Also the trips to Novindus, as stated, take about 6 months.  Rise of a Merchant Prince takes about 2 or 3 years. It just drags on for so long that it adds up to 10 years. But Erik is definatly 15 at the start.

http://hallofworlds.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=347&st=40 Erik on Page three on that link there is a little discussion with the years of the books. Maybe that will help you work it all out. =P

I don't think 10 years is right and here is why...

Serpentwar Spoiler
[spoilers]
When they burn the shipyards in Maharta, they thought that they gained 10 years and we know that this is just not the case as it's stated many times after SOADQ.  And if i'm recalling correctly when Erk comes back to Ravensburg, Rosalyn's baby is not yet 1 year old so we're looking at about 18-20 months from the time Erik flees Ravensburg and the time he returns in ROAMP.  Add 2 years for ROAMP that makes 3.5 years app.  ROADK if i'm right takes about 1-2 years so we're only at 5 - 6 years max.

Spoiler: show
Actually Rise of a Merchant Prince takes three years, as I am certain Roo has atleast both his children in these books. It's awhile before he has his first child so thats about a year including the 9 months of pregnancy by Kala. Then she doesn't get pregnent straight away again until atleast a year after.

Plus Roo going to get Erik and Calis at the end of Rise of a Merchant Prince adds alot of time. Erik trains his new band of men for atleast a year before Calis sends him off to get Irongate, Highpass etc.

Also there is about the 1-2 years that take part when Krondor is destroyed and then the final war in Shards of a Broken Crown.

Seems to be alot longer then what you've said above Erik_De_Von_Loungeville.

actually regarding your point on Shards, that whole book takes less time than what you've mentioned.

Spoiler: show
I just finished reading shards not too long ago and they set out almost right away to take back the west because they want to prevent fadawah taking yabon and installing himself.  The whole book takes place in less than a year.

hmmm and where is the inconsisitency? I think that it spanned over a long time period. Remember, even magician if im not mistaken spans over 12 years... although it reads like it only took about 2 which of course is wrong.
