Greater & Lesser Paths
« on: November 21, 2005, 11:19:23 AM »

I'm just going to spoiler this whole thing just incase.
Spoiler: show
I remember sometime back I read that Ray started off writing Magician which was set 500 years before the current time they were writing in. He went back to write about how the Greater and Lesser paths came to be, as if... in the 500 years time things have gone back to just the two paths and everything else they have learnt has gone.

Which brings me to think that if it does end up having just the Greater & lesser paths, then that would basically mean that nearly every single main character would be killed or die. And not just main character's but all people who know more about magic in the world.

So yeah, this brings me to think of a very very lonely end to Midkemia....

-Speculation on endings

So um... thoughts?

Thoughts? I think you're jumping to some pretty massive conclusions.

Spoiler: show
Ray said he went back 500 years to write about how Greater Path magic came to be on Midkemia. Lesser Path magic already was, he wasn't introducing how it came to be.
- Magician spoiler

As for the rest of your speculation, I don't think I understand it. You'll have to clarify exactly what you mean. You say, "not just main characters but all magic users in the world". What's your reasoning? There's either lesser path or greater path magicians. Those who walk many paths are rare individuals, and are certainly not "every magic user".

Anyway, I think you're way off track in your speculation. I've not seen anything in the books, nor read any comment from Ray outside of the books that lead me to believe magic will be diminished in any way...

Spoiler: show
And "going back to two paths" makes no sense, because if it was "going back" it would be to one path - the Lesser Path (since before Pug restored Greater Path magic Midkemia was only home to the Lesser Path, as I said before).
- Magician spoiler/Speculation

I won't discount the possibility that you may be right, I just simply think it's about as likely as Arutha being resurrected.

Hmm...I don't know, Suli. I certainly hope that it wouldn't be the case. The idea is a bit radical. Plus in good stories there's always some good guys at the end.

Hmm I'm probably misunderstanding you Suli but are you not saying this is has already happened? If so why would it happen again?

How long ago was this matter of "500 years " raised?

Given the regularity of inconsistencies about character age, toponymy and the like, I 'm pretty certain that either:
1) Ray has forgotten about it
2) He doesn't have the faintest idea how he's going to make it happen and what's to come after
3) If he does, he has it all planned to happen in twenty years' publishing
4) If the latter, he'd better have it all planned in advance so someone can finish it for him in case of accidents - or old age - prevent him from writing (the way JRRT never completed his work)

the 500 years in the future setting is where the original game was played back in the late seventies before Ray even started writing the books.

No wonder there are inconsistiencies in his works. A long time period in the stories and a long time between his works.

Oh right... I see. but that doesn't mean all too much. I think the books have probably evolved a bit beyond what he expected when he turned his gaming world into a book... then again maybe he has plans to do something. if so I'd say it would be the end of the series...
