I want the special edition!
« on: October 01, 2004, 10:52:27 PM »

I know I saw a thread about this on the old forum, but I forget all the info :(

Shifty was telling me that there was a super special edition of Magician?  I've wanted to pick it up for awhile, but I can't remember if somebody said that it wasn't available here (in Canada), or if it wasn't what it was cracked up to be in terms of a new fancy edition.

(I'm sorry if this was asked somewhere else, or if nobody knows what I'm talking about)

I guess it depends on what you mean by special edition.  What I picked up back around Christmas time last year was a Barnes and Noble reprint of the 1992 single hard cover of the Author's Prefered Edition.  The spine has a special Barnes and Noble logo, but otherwise, its essentially identical to the 1992 edition, including the great artwork.

I see it's still available: http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearc...760741778&itm=1

If you don't have Magician in hard cover, I highly recommend this one, you can't beat this deal.  I remember seeing it back in 92 in a book store for $20 and I didn't have the money for it.  When next I looked, it was gone, never to be seen again.  I kicked myself for years for not getting it and was quite giddy to find this reprint.  You just can't beat a good hard cover edition.

Now, you may also be talking about the very limited leather bound edition of Magician.  I don't remember when that came out exactly.  Mid 90's as I recall, definitely after the 92 APE.  Although, now that I think about it, that one may just have been talked about.  I know I never actually saw it available for sale in a store or online.

Thanks for the info, and the links  Ed :D  I do appreciate you going to the all the trouble!

Well now, I *think* I read the author's preferred edition (Shifty loaned the book to me, so he'd be sure).

But I'd love to have a hardback version.  Or hell, a leatherbound would be even better, just a wonderful "tome" to have on my shelf.  Everyone I know has had a hard time putting that book down, and how wonderful would it be to have a classic like Magician that LOOKED like a classic on my shelf!

But I thought their was an edition released more recently...was it an anniversary edition?  Again, I'm not sure as I've only talked briefly to Shifty about it  (and most recently while drunk).  Maybe Ray could clear this up, haw haw.

There is indeed an aniversary edition ryath. Unfortuanatly for you im lazy comapred to Ultimate Ed so im not going to go look for a picutre    Its the same story but in a new Hardback cover. Theres no huge big picture on the front, just a dark mahogany/redish cover with a gold inlay of some symbol. Pretty cool especially as mine is signed by the God himself. Im sure others will be able to find you a nice picture of it  :king:

EEHEE!  WELL! *sniff* since there's no picture, we COULD  be talking about a sack of oats for all I know! A SACK OF OATS!

Seriously:

Thanks, PFA.  I couldn't find the edition at our local bookstore chain site (chapters/indigo), nor on amazon.ca....wonder if it wasn't released in Canada or if I'm just really bad at searching?

And lucky you with your signed one...*sulk*  If I ever met Ray, I'd ask him to do an authors artist rendition of Fantus, as well.  And then be promptly kicked out of his bathroom, I'm sure.

I'm going to keep looking for this edition.  It was the first real fantasy book I ever read, and I'd love to have a really nice hardcover version.

I got that Barnes and Noble duplicate for Christmas last year too. A lot of ink stains on the pages, which I wasn't too happy about. Then earlier this year I found the original '92 edition with dust jacket in pretty good shape for $8(!!!!) at a local Half Price Books, along with a bunch of other Feist first edition hardcovers for the same price. I already had all of them, but decided to buy them anyway considering the cheap price and swap them with my existing copies if any were in better shape. Was going to sell them on Ebay but finally figured I wouldn't get all that much for them and ended up donating them to the library where I work, as our Feist selection was a bit slim. Now we have everything (all in hardback) but Krondor the Betrayal, Daughter of the Empire and Faerie Tale.  :king:

Oh, a very fine score there , Captain.  Whenever I see a 92 hardcover on Ebay, it seems to usually close at $20 or greater.

The copy that I got from B&N was very clean.  I read it in about a week and then spent the first three months of this year rereading all of my Feist collection.

Geeze, speed reader! I'm doing the same thing right now and started around when you started but am only on Shadow of a Dark Queen right now. But then again I'm lazy and only reading about 1-2 chapters a day. And the same drive isn't there as reading a new book since I've read them all 4 or 5 times already.

hehe, a speed reader is one thing I've never been accused of.     Actually, going through the Feist books again this year marks only my second pass through the series.  Much of that first pass was getting to be close to ten years, so it was much like visiting old friends that I hadn't seen in a long time.  Aside from the Feist books, I can probably count on one hand the number of books that I've ever read a second time.

If I can, I'll send Coe a picture of all of the Magician hardback editions published in the US & UK to post. (well, except the 1st 1983 UK edition, I only have that in a trade paperback....but you'll get the idea)
This should give you some idea of what's out there :)

Pics have been sent...
Actually, I remember the story of how you got that copy ;D

Incidently, I think John has 3 or 4 hardback copies, and yours is the only other one I know of...

OK, for those who are interested in such things.....

These are the UK hardback editions of Magician.
Starting at the top left...
1983 hardback & 1985 hardback
1992 Authors Prefered Edition hardback & 2002 20th anniversary Special limited edition
From what the publishers can tell us, there where as few as 500 books printed for the 92 edition, and as many as 5000 1st printings of the 20th anniv edition.  The rest fall somewhere in between.
Prices are hard to guage for UK editions (as most consider US editions to be true firsts)

These are the US hardback editions of Magician
Again, starting at the top left...
1982 1st edition hardback, 1992 Authors Prefered Edition hardback & 2003 Barnes & Nobel Authors Prefered Edition hardback
The bottom 2 books are the Easton Press Magician Apprentice, Magician Master set. They are leather bound and laid in 22kt gold.  Apprentice is considered a signed 'collectors' or 'special' edition by Easton as the deem you must buy 6 of their normal books (Master falls into this category) to then be elligible to buy a special signed edition...then you must buy another 6 books before you are elligible to buy another signed edition...(Sword of Shannara is another example of a signed special edition)
Prices for US first editions are huge these days depending on condition.  Asking prices somewhere between $400 US & $600 US is not unheard of.

OK, I could rattle on here about editions for ages....If anyone has any questions, post away. :)

Thanks for the post Cameron, John  has mentioned that for the UK 83 first edition hardback there was around 1000 printed, but over half went to libraries so there was not many to go to the general public.
