Spoiler: show
Patrick conDoin - i liked him and thought he was shabily (sp?) treated in SOABC - anyone else agree? In ROADK he was a fairly interesting character but in SOABC he was just about dissed by everyone and made to look more like a child than he did in the earlier novels

Not sure, but I'm guessing not to many will share your view on this.  Frankly I think he deserved it.

I was not a fan to say the least. but thats how Ray wrote him, he was never supposed to be a particually liked or loved character.

Spoiler: show
The reason you moight of seen him that way is because in RoaDK he was following James and williams advice, people he probably held in awe and respect after that In shards when they weren't there anymore he felt he had to take matters into his own hands and didnt take the advice of the people that were left to advise him, they may not have been as great as james or william but they were competent and he ignored them and treated pug with disrespect

but like coe said its just the way REF wanted him to be, if he wanted us to like him I'm sure we would of. Besides Having another Condoin prince who was just about perfect and all especially at that age would of been a little too much to swallow.

IMO Patrick was written solely as a means to sever Pugs ties with the Kingdom.

OK Con Doin spoilers here from the Riftwar and the Serpantwar

Spoiler: show

Since the demise of Rodrick the forth every Con Doin ruler was brilliant and loved. It was about time for a rotten egg amongst the bunch. As others have said, during Rage he was supported by some amazing men. Suddenly all those men were gone and he had to make decisions by himself. Add on top of this a missing half kingdom or so and every noble in the land trying to win his favour and ii dont think you have a very good mix. He seemed pertty cool to me in Rage, and his his one liner to pug "Pardon me cousin Pug, but have you grown younger since the last time we met"(or something liek that) was very funny in the context of the moment. But i think Ray made it so that his character had fallen under the pressure of his rule. Ray is good at making characters very realistic because Patricks failure is a very realistic one. They cant all be Aruthras or Jimmy's.

I agree with Pugzy on this one, but along with him feeling that he had to live up to his ancestors and then one better them.

Gotta agree.  He was a brat, and while I know there was a statement in one of the books about "degradation of the line", I really rather suprised Borric (or his advisors) would let patrick act the way he did.  Borric had jimmy and Locklear to school him, so where was Patrick's "tutors"?????

That's the problem, Patricks tutors were the Princes & Dukes. Not just any, but the ones that actaully did heroic deeds etc, thats why he felt that he had to live up to them and not fail.

The only person I can recall being mentioned as one of Patrick's tutors was
Spoiler: show
Arutha, (Earl Vencar) and he wasn't a Duke at the time. Nor a Prince for that matter. And he faced the same pressures growing up in the shadow of his own famous and gifted father. But he wasn't the brat that Patrick was. It all comes down to a question of character.

Good Points.  He needed to have a more common touch, so he was more in tune with what life was like for non-royals.

SERPENTWAR SAGA
Spoiler: show
I guess the reason why i liked him was because with patrick i thought REF might have used him as a grey character...you know...not an amazing king, not a crappy king either, just one who was (as most kings are) driven by self-interest for the good of the realm as apposed to every the other kings and princes post rodric. this was the character we saw in everything up to SOABC...i guess the thing that got to me most was that everyone dissed him. I can accept Pug and Nakor doing it (they aren't self rightoes for nothing) but Erik, Dash, Jimmy, Arutha, and Greylock we're all talking about him as if he was a little kid. . Which tbh, I don't think he was. But, majority rules I guess so I formally will accept he is as bad as you all say.

I guess my beef is really with REF for how less grey his story becomes at this point but I did love the way he dealt with Arutha Jamison (imho one of the most underated characters and even though I thought it came a bit to early considering how much screen/page time he got the best death REF has wrote)

ps, his (Patrick) dry line at the start of SOABC was quality.

"but like coe said its just the way REF wanted him to be, if he wanted us to like him I'm sure we would of." - i guess i wanted this to be my decision and not just REF's
