Spoiler: show
Wasn't it supposed to be the trip to Novindus you hear about all through Shadow of a Dark Queen? The one with Calis, Bobby de Loungeville, etc.

I posted all the info about the book on the old board, stuff from the Feist list and Archives. Basically Ray changed publishers, they wanted a new series not a sequal to a book with a rival publisher. That's why the Serpantwar Saga was born and not ROTB. Ray incorperated the basic idea of the return to Novindus in SOADQ with the back history to Calis and Bobby.

I think it would have been good to see the sequal to Bucaneer, One thing I am not sure about is whether Nicholas or harry would have been in it.

Yeah it was shown talked about in Shadow of a Dark Queen, but the story they tell is just a bloody tease, it makes me want a whole book of it, it seems so interesting, especially have more of Bobby de Loungevill, he just wasnt in it enough. I think Nicholas would have been in it, but i dont really think that Harry would have. I hate Publishers, but if there werent any Publishing Probs and Ray made that book do you think that the Serpentwar Saga would have still came out?

I reckon the general theme of the Serpant war would have happened, whether we would have had Eric and Roo is a different story as its the adventure to Novindus which is the story of the first book, it might have been a little repetive having 2 trips to Novindus in subsequent books. So I think the story would have changed here a bit.

Pity that...I would of liked to read a sequel to the first one.

Did Feist just start the Serpentwar saga instead of this or was the sequel supposed to be part of it?

[!--quoteo--][div class=\'quotetop\']QUOTE[/div][div class=\'quotemain\'][!--quotec--]OK, here's the story: The book that was never written was called "Return of the Buccaneer." It would have been a one-on, direct sequel, in which 1) we would have seen the messy end to Nicholas's love affair with his Sweety, 2) would have set up some of the angst you see in Calis 3) introduced Bobby 4) had a bit of action with William 5) seen the 2nd (disastrous) trip to Novindus for Nicholas and Calis. Needless to say, had I written that book, SOADQ would have been different. But, Miranda would not have been in that book. [/quote]

I think this clears things up

Although I like Miranda, I want to read the unwritten book! lol

Everything Ray points out in his comments in 95 needs cleared up. I wanted to hear more about point 1 because Nicky really was unsure there. 2 would of made people like Calis more because some don't understand his behaviour. 3 might have ruined the start of the Serpentwar saga. I originally thought he was just going to kill the prisoners, but if I had read more about him I would of known he wasn't.  And number 4 & 5 would of been nice to read about.

Did someone say earlier this was all because of publishers? If so, let them all rot in hell! lol

Hearst Publishing (Morrow/Avon) wanted an entirely new series, starting with a new "1st book" and I couldn't write RotB as a 1st book. Just too dependent upon TKB. Additionally, it would have been the darkest book so far, as the "triumph" of the book was Calis and Bobby barely surviving to fight another day. There was an entire sub-plot about Nicky's evolution into an Admiral that, while interesting (to me), might have been too C.F. Forester or Patrick O'Brian for some folks. In toto, most of the important stuff gets covered in conversation explaining why things happened the way they did.

Ray posted the below recently
Quote
As far as Return of the Buccaneer, but novel that never got written, I wasn't told to not write it; I decided to move on to Shadow of a Dark Queen and the rest of the Serpent War, with the agreement of my new US Publisher.  I had the same British publisher who thought it was also a good idea, simply because RotB was going to be a "bridging" book.  A lot of what I would have written about became backstory for Serpentwar.   What would have occurred is covered in dialogue between Bobby and Nakor in Shadow.    That book would have introduced Bobby, introduced Miranda and how she became involved with Calis, and how Calis ended up working for the Crown.  The farther I get from that project, the less regret I have over it not being written.

I think I would've liked very much to read this book.  I don't mind a bit of change in Serpentwar, actually, even though it was good enough as it was. :)  It's mainly because I loved reading The King's Buccaneer and even though it didn't have all the usual and familiar characters, it introduced new characters that are highly prized by me. :)  And I would certainly like to know how Robert de Loungville comes into all this and meets Nakor.  It'd be nice to know what happened to Harry and Brisa and of course, Nicholas.  On the plus side, since it's across the ocean, it's a possibility that Amos may show up again and of course, Calis =D

Perhaps someone should have raised this topic to ask Ray to answer whether or not it truly is dead. A shame because I'd love to hear an annoucement that he will spend the time on it sometime.

Yeah I like them both...

Anyway, I admit it would be nice to read the unwritten novel, but thats what it is ... unwritten... and I can barely imagine that if the events of the Serpentwar were changed how broad a change it might be in the long run. Plus I personally would rather have Ray working on new books :P

[span style=\'color:yellow\']Calis has to be firm, as he lost lots by being too lenient before !

Elves are not humans, remember Legolas !

I quite understand him (ref:Shadow of a dark queen).

I'd have liked very much to have a "rotb", as I like Nicholas a lot but we are not the author so we must be LENIENT with Ray !
