Riftwar Legacy forgotten?
« on: September 21, 2004, 12:40:04 PM »

Hi,

It has been quite some time that I'am wondering what happened to the project of the two next books in the Riftwar Legacy series : "The Crawler" and "The Black Mage"
I quite loved the first three of them, (and played the computer games which are related to it) but well, it still requires a sequel, the story is not finished, Who is the Crawler? what will happen with Sidi etc.

I checked many FAQ and lists and did not find any info on those books, did REF only delay them, or has he decided to never released them after all? that would very sad.

Ray is unable to release the rest of the Legacy books due to contract issues. I hope these issues are cleared up soon, as Im also a fan of the Legacy.

Hopefully they have been put on hold. I am not a fan of those books and would rather have Feist work on the proper stories instead of backtracking. However, saying that, there is some key characters in them which have not been explained thoroughly so it could be important to go back. Damn.

I would rather have those characters that ALS mentioned remain an enigma then have the Krondor Series return. I really dont like thsoe books and having the characters remain mysterious adds something to them.

LOL good point

Like people have said the issue is a contract issue, if Ray had his way he would have released the books years ago. But the computer game contract with Sierra prevents him publishing any more Krondor books. Sierra has also been taken over a few times and the legal stuff is now bindblowing I expect. Its going to be tricky to get the books published, but I am sure they will eventually, be VERY patient.

Wasn't there talk that instead of having 2 more books in the series that he would just combine both into one book?

How has Sierra prevented more books?

Its sad in todays world that your own idea can be taken away just like that.

Ray has mentioned about combining the 2 final books into 1 larger book so its completed and out of the way quicker.

Sierra own the rights to Krondor computer games and story, Ray can't publish a book about the Krondor series without their permission.

No. While the characters are his, the story isn't. The BaK story was written by Neal Halford and John Cutter, and RtK was also written by people other than Ray. Both stories are property of Sierra, hence the necessity of getting their permission to use the story.

Well the problem is mainly about the obscure characters that may add a lot to the whole midkemia universe story... the Crawler for example, who is he really?  even the Upright Man, being mysterious, ends up being revealed and demystified, as all characters in Feist Universe are, at one time or another...
and Sidi, and some secret war implying "standby" gods such as Arch-Indar ...  or so.

The problem is that the events of the "tear of the gods" are mentionned in the regular series book, and a mysterious mage appearing in Talon of the Silver Hawk... maybe it is related, who knows?

well, if it is only on hold then I really hope they can release it one day. No need to make a game out of it, after all, "The Assassins" had no game based upon it...

I agree, I kinda miss some more info about Jahara and William as well. Hopefully the license thingy will get solved and hopefully Feist will come out with a big fat book or 2 to end the serie.

Yeah there were some moments in RoaDK i think where I had to really think to piece things together. It'd be best if he could just get the Krondor series done as soon as possible and ONCE he has finished writing all five riftwars, if he ever does finish, go back and write smaller ones about other minor characters etc.

You know what'll happen though - all the license issues will be cleared up, but it'll mean having to re-release the first 3 books and they'll cme out with new cover art. Or the next books will have a completley different theme from the first 3 and make my collection look all out of whack!

That always happens.....

If you really want the books why not start a letter/e-mail/ boycott against Sierra?  That might get their attention.
