« on: October 01, 2009, 02:27:58 AM »

Ok so im re reading all the Feist books.. for the hell of it.. and i tend to notice minor discrepancies..

Why in Rage of a demon king is Roberts last name Spelt...: D'Lyes... and then in Talon of a silver hawk his last name is spelt: de lyis..

this buggged me, is this the same person? im assuming it has to be.. but why oh why would he spell his name differently.. surely he couldnt have forgotten.

Editing error, perhaps?

They are legion, after all, especially with the more recent novels, unfortunately. :elf_gloop:

I seem to recall several inconsistancies with names throughout the books. One example being the spelling of "Jameson", which became "Jamison" and I think there was another spelling at one stage.

I also recall that Feist said that variations in the names were a trait of Midkemia itself, rather than any mistake on his part or the publishers.

Eh. As long as I know who he's talking about.

There are loads of errors and loads of threads in this forum that talk about them.    But that's a good point Kiks, and I like the new avatar too.  In times gone by, folks weren't as literate as they are now.  Alot of things got spelled by the way they sounded, and depending on the person writing it, the results could be very different.  History itself would support Ray's statement.  Problem is, it drives us crazy enough to be distracted by it.

P.S.  Great to hear from you, Calis, after all these years and I hope to see more of you as time allows.

If one were inclined, at least these inconsistencies could be explained away as a lack of standardized spelling of surnames (a la medieval England).

Feist, clearly, is not one for consistency or factual accuracy The sun rises in the West in Rage of a Demon King ch.17, "Roo glanced to the West and saw the sun rising."
