Yes Leso Varen has been mentioned in earlier books,(Spoilers for multiple Feist books including Riftwar Legacy, Legends and Serpantwar)
Spoiler: show
remember he has died and been resurrected many times, he also has multiple names.

Books I know that he has appeared in include Jimmy The Hand, Krondor: Tear of the Gods, referenced to in one of the serpantwar books. Earlier names include Sidi and whatever that wondering travellers name was, who was taken in by the Earl of Lands's End in Jimmy the Hand.

Spoiler for Jimmy the Hand, Rage of a Demon King and Krondor: The Assassins.

Spoiler: show
Sidi's name in Jimmy the Hand was Lyman Malachy. I think it was Rage of a Demon King that Pug mention him, and he was also in Krondor: The Assassins if i recall correctly.

Spoiler: show
Im pretty sure I came across a refernce to Sidi's being a dream of Nalars, and if so, couldn't the issue of his essence being in a particualar "vessel" be a ploy. I mean, didn't they destroy his "vessel" in Tear?

Tear of the Gods Spoiler...
Spoiler: show
No they didnt kill Sidi's vessal in Tear of the Gods, that was the Liches Vessal. Sidi is not a dream, like i said before, he is just a magician doing dark magic for Nalar.

That whole evil ploy seemed a bit of a waste of time in the end. All those years for what? I wasn't really sure about what he was actually trying to achieve either by trying to do what he was. With the lifestone it's trying to bring back the Valheru - reap destruction and what-not, but I really didn't see the point to him helping the baron. Could someone explain perhaps?

Im not following.
But i think about that Lyman in Jimmy the Hand, maybe it wasnt originally written about Sidi, but when he was doing Exiles he just thought "i am going to make that Sidi" maybe but who can tell. Cause it does seem quite pointless, unless he was just using the sacrifices for his own use aswell.

spoilers for everything
Spoiler: show

In the chamber of the gods or whatever it is in exiles return, doesn't it mention that he had an original identity and body, but became consumed by the madness of nalar. simply dealing with nalar corrupted him. When his original body died, he lived on, sort of like a memory of nalar.. but he wasn't a dream, he wa originally a human.

Exiles return spoiler

Spoiler: show
I don't think anybody says explicitly that this is what Leso Varen is.  I think this is what Kaspar is told how generally Nalar gets his minions.  Although he is probably one of those corrupted people.

One of the Keepers tells Kaspar that Leso Varen is a dream of Nalar.  Of course, according to "Hildy", the keepers don't know the truth of everything......
