Written order question
« on: April 11, 2006, 08:36:51 PM »

Hi there! Its been a while since i've posted, last time was just after i had finished ADaS. Since then i've read PoTB, TKB, SoaDQ, RoaMP, RoaDK and have almost finished SoaBC. Im still in love with the series and can't wait to keep reading, finish the conclave of shadows and start FotN.
The qusetion i have though is that the order i've read the books in is PoTB onwards after ADaS as i thought this was right. But in SoaBC there are several references to The Crawler, and Pug directly refers to an incident with Sidi he had fifty years ago. Obviously i had no idea who these characters were. Have since found out the the Riftwar Legacy comes before Krondors Sons and deals with these characters. The queston i have is, when were the Riftwar Legacy books written? Were they always meant to be read straight after ADaS or (as i thought) were they written after, (i seem to remember them being written based on a computer game?). If they were writtin after the Serpent War does that mean that, at the time of release anyway, in SoaBC, references are being made about characters that Feist hadn't written about? I was confused by the references when i came across them, which prompted me into looking for the answer, but if the Riftwar Legacy books were written after it doesn't seem to make sence. Hopefully someone can clear this up for me. Cheers Tetsuo

Hi there!

The Riftwar Legacy books (Krondor series) were written after SoaBC ( although I'm not sure exactly where the games fit in) I recommend reading them after the Serpentwar, because it makes a lot of things apparent. If you were to read the Legacy before the Serpentwar, it'd spoil things a bit I think.

After that, go straight on to the Conclave of Shadows and Flight.

 Enjoy!

You will be able to find a lot of info in the Feist FAQ > http://hallofworlds.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=874

The Serpantwar books were writtern after the first Feist game Betrayal at Krondor. I think this came out in 92 a few fears before shadow of a dark queen. This means Ray probably had drafted out how he wanted the Riftwar Legacy series to pan out and thus when he wrote the Serpantwar books he was able to connect the 2 stories. Its just the final few books in the Riftwar Legacy series has never come out.

I hope this helps. See you aorund the Hall.

OK, I knew that BaK was 1992, but had no idea when SoaDQ came out. I now see that it was 1994

One thing though: the first mention of The Crawler was in Assassins I think, and I'm not sure that The Crawler or Sidi appeared in BaK. So would that mean that they first appeared in RtK (1998) or have I completely forgotten Betrayal?

Anyway, the books were written after the Serpentwar, and IMO they're better suited to be read there too. In conclusion, chronological order isn't necessarily good...

Ok great, cheers! Thanks for clearing that up. I was just suprised to find Feist refering to characters the readers never met before. Did anyone else find this the first time they read SoaDQ?
